When looking into colleges, I was unsure if Virginia Tech was my ideal school. It was a stem based school over four hours from everything I’ve ever known. It wasn’t on the top of my list, but it had a spot.
I applied under the communications branch for journalism. I was ever so passionate about the subject. I was the Editor-in-Chief for two different writing organizations and I even wrote a book during my high school career.Â
I’ve been here for three months and it is by far the best decision I’ve ever made.
- BEING A HOKIE
-
I never truly understood what a Hokie was, only that it was “silly turkey.” Often, rival schools would poke fun at the odd mascot.Â
“What is a Hokie?”
“You’re a turkey.”
“Can you even fly?”
Yes a bunch of those questions were asked when I said I was going to Virginia Tech. I never truly knew the answer until recently.Â
“What is a Hokie?”
The answer is simply me, “I am.”
There’s something about pride and strength that all Virginia Tech students have. We are all proud Hokies and we don’t let demeaning comments upset us.
- the community
-
The beauty of Virginia Tech is the sense of community. Blacksburg is truly a college town which means Virginia Tech culture is everywhere. Virginia Tech’s motto is “Ut prosim” or “that I may serve,” and it’s all about how we help each other. Every corner you turn, maroon and orange will chase you down. I mean that in the most positive way.
Nonetheless from pre-game fun at Center Street to midnight trips to Waffle House it’s an active environment. Always new people to meet and hundreds of stories to learn. It’s an unforgettable experience every time I go out and meet people.Â
- THE CAMPUS
-
It is an understatement to say that our campus is beautiful. It’s the most breathtaking view I’ve ever seen in my life. The contrast of the reds, oranges, yellows and small amounts of green always amaze me. The piles of leaves huddle waiting for someone to kick or jump into them. The whole campus gives this Hallmark vibe—well without the cringy plot—just the beauty aspect. That’s one of my favorite things about campus. I may drag my feet to my 8 am but at least the journey is nice.
- FOOTBALL GAMES
-
Even Sam Howell—the current quarterback for the Washington Commanders and former UNC quarterback— said our energy was unbeatable. From the electric student section to the iconic “Enter Sandman” jumping, no school can beat Virginia Tech. Regardless of the score, the support system of Hokies is undeniably strong. Fireworks and cannons for every win, cheering and booing for every occasion. Attendees even carry around keys to shake for every third down ‘key play.’Â
Win or lose the experience is always an 11/10, or even higher.
Overall, from the community to the atmosphere, Virginia Tech is amazing. If you want the best college experience, Virginia Tech is the school for you. Spectacular education and the bonus of amazing friendships and experiences, what’s not to love?
