With everything going on, especially with the change of campus operational level from yellow to orange, one can feel isolated on campus. The feeling of being stuck is one that I am very familiar with, however, my suite and I have been trying to make the best of it. None of us are from North Carolina, so we have been trying to explore as much of the state as possible. However, this might not be possible for everyone who doesn’t have access to a car. So, here are 3 fun things to do that are a short uber ride (COVID safe, of course), or a carpool ride away.
- Ghost Tour
-
Did you know that Winston-Salem is one of the most haunted cities in America? Crazy right? I didn’t realize how much interesting history is held in the small town. Winston-Salem actually started off as the two separate towns of Winston and Salem. Though it doesn’t have any war history, the city of Winston-Salem was involved in so much more. On this ghost tour downtown, you will walk through the historic neighborhoods and learn not only the iconic stories but the spooky ones behind them as well.
Fun Fact: Tin foil was invented here!
- Pilot Mountain State Park
-
For those of you who love the outdoors, Pilot Mountain is the place to go.
With so many beautiful trails, there is never a dull sight to see. All of the trails differ in difficulty, so there are places for everyone. Especially with the fall leaves changing color, the views from the top of the mountain are gorgeous. And it won’t stay like this for long! Make sure you get out there before the leaves drop!
Pro Tip: Make sure you get there early before the weekend rush comes. They will turn away people if the mountain gets too full!
- Farmers’ Market
-
This is a great fall activity. While it only goes on for a few weekends in the fall, it is a blast if you can make it. It is past downtown, just a short drive away. If you have a kitchen to cook in, there are tons of fresh and available produce to explore. All of the produce is sourced locally from farms around the area. There are also stands for local honey and cheese. Lastly, a bunch of local businesses come to supply coffee and treats as well. It is an overall great vibe!
Pro Tip: Chad’s Chai has a really good lavender matcha latte!
