As someone who was recently released from isolation at school, I have a few insider tips for everyone just in case you get sent too. I was lucky enough not to contract COVID-19, however, the stay at the Best Western Hotel was not the most enjoyable experience I’ve had. Here are some of my isolation must haves:
- A blanket
-
Bring your own blanket! It might seem silly because the hotel already has some. However, having your own blanket is a really nice, comforting thing to bring. It makes the space your own and less like a hotel. It also can get chilly!
- Utensils!
-
Of course the hotel will provide plastic utensils for your meal. But, it’s always nice to have a real fork and knife to eat with. Also, bringing your own mug (and maybe even a plate or bowl) is super nice. The rooms have microwaves if you want to make a warm cup of tea or soup.
- Something that is not electronic
-
Because most of our classes and work are online this semester, taking a break from the screen is really important. Usually, I would beat the computer fatigue by going out on a run or walk, however, one can’t really do this in the Best Western. My screen time went up immensely because there was nothing else to do, it drove me crazy. However, bringing a book, sketchbook, or anything else that can entertain you that’s not a screen is a must. Blue light glasses are helpful too!
- Snacks
-
Snacks always make things better so make sure to bring plenty of them. My favorites were Kind Bars, chocolate covered almonds, and popcorn. Anything to snack on between meals is a must.
- Class supplies
-
While this is an obvious essential, sometimes people forget! Don’t forget to bring everything that you need for your classes. This includes: textbooks, notebooks, chargers, highlights/pen, rulers, calculators, and anything else you can think of. Many people forget about these things and it makes it so frustrating when you realize you don’t have them.
- A good attitude
-
This is the most important essential. While it absolutely sucks to be isolated for two weeks, it’s important to remember that you are doing this for your safety as well as the people around you. This experience might not be perfect, but remember that there are people there to help you and they are trying their best. It’s not how you want to be spending your college days, but it’s only temporary!
Don’t forget to wear a mask, wash your hands, socially distance, and be smart and safe this semester!
