Artsy and Business-Minded? You Bet. Meet the Lovely Hannah Whitaker.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Name: Hannah Whitaker (’12)

From: Virginia Beach, VA

Major: Studio Art with Art History and Entrepreneurship

HC: What do you do around campus?
HW: I’m the TriDelta t-shirt chair, so I make t-shirts … all the time.  I’m working with the Transforming Race/BIG TENT Art Project—it’s a project I have been working on with 9 Wake students and 11 Winston-Salem high school students as a collaborative project through the Winston-Salem Human Resources department in which we create art about breaking racial barriers.  This project will also consist of a large tent that will be traveling around to different high schools with all of our art inside.  Also, I have also been a sales associate at the Winston-Salem Bevello since last August. (Come check us out, we’re at Thru-Way!) I’m on the Art Alumni Advisory Board.  We work with WFU art alumni to create a database for undergraduates to use as a resource for deciding what they could be interested in or how to pursue a career in their field of interest.

Hi there old lady on the Brooklyn Bridge!

HC: What were you up to this summer?
HW: I did the Summer Management Program for the first half.  I then stayed in Winston for a while and got to serve as the manager at Bevello.

HC: Since you’re from the beach, you’ve gotta dish on your beach bag essentials. Best sunscreen?
HW: Neutrogena Sport Sunscreen, hands down.

HC: What’s your favorite type of swimsuit?
HW: I’m a bit of a bathing suit junkie.  Living at the beach and having a pool in my backyard means if I’m not working, I’m probably in a bathing suit.  Triangle tops are probably my favorite. I love to tan on the beach, but I can only do that for so long.  I need to run around and play in the water.  I also love to surf, and I definitely need to know that my bathing suit won’t come off if I catch a bad wave! I have also found a new love for beach yoga which requires some pretty nimble movement and bathing suit tops that stay in place.  So I guess, to put it simply, I prefer cute but sport-friendly swim suits.

HC: What books are you planning on reading this summer?
HW: Accounting, Marketing, and Finance text books for SMP! But I’m also Rre-reading Steve Martin’s An Object of Beauty, The Help by Kathryn Stockett, What the Dog Saw and Other Adventures by Malcolm Gladwell and The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.

HC: Were you able to squeeze any art projects into your packed summer?
HW: While I could spend all day reading book after book on the North End of Virginia Beach, one of my goals for the summer is to paint every blank canvas I have right now (at least a dozen).  I haven’t been able to paint for fun in over a year, and I cannot wait to explore what I love to do even more.

HC: What are some random fun facts about you?
HW: My favorite color is green.  I love to scuba dive.  I am obsessed with everything Apple, Anthropologie and interior design.
