“I have nothing to wear!”

Every one of us has had that dreadful moment of staring into a closet bursting with clothes yet feeling utterly lost. It’s not that we don’t have enough jackets, stylish tops, or rockin’ shoes—the problem is we have too much. You might as well reach blindly in and grab something, or else spend hours sifting through to find something that matches! In college, we don’t have that kind of time—or space—for a crowded wardrobe. That’s why its time we reclaim our simple style, girls. It’s time to head back to the basics.

WHAT EVERY GIRL SHOULD HAVE:

Leggings

These are the staple of college life, the ever-present comfortable replacement to jeans. Have multiple pairs of leggings ranging from fleece-lined, to patterned, to colorful to add some flair, or go classic with a set of black or gray ones. The great thing about leggings is their versatility—wear them under an oversized sweater for a casual night in or dress it up with a skater skirt and cute booties. This is definitely a girl’s necessity.

Little Black Dress

This is the saving grace of a college girl’s closet, perfect for that sorority dinner, job interview, or date night. Choose a black dress with a simple, timeless cut and style that will be perfect with a colorful pair of heels or strappy sandals and cardigan.

Oversized Sweater

This is my favorite look, and also the most comfy! Make sure that you have a few oversized sweaters in your closet for those lazy days or freezing cold ones, and pair it with our other favorite basic—leggings!

WHAT EVERY GIRL SHOULD KNOW:

Have a color palette.

There’s nothing more frustrating than buying that cute new top and finding out that you have nothing to match it with. The biggest mistake we make in our wardrobes is having the entire rainbow sitting in it—but no base for foundation. Instead, try to stick with a general scheme. For instance, look for whites, grays, blacks, and shades of brown, using the neutrals as a base for the occasional colorful statement piece like that emerald blouse or poppy pink sweater.

Accessorize!

Once your wardrobe has slimmed down to key clothing pieces, the fun turns up in the accessories. Instead of splurging on expensive new shirts or shoes, get more bang-for-the-buck and invest in statement necklaces, midi-rings, and cuff earrings. Make your jewelry and accessories the bold, unique part of your outfit each day—it’s the subtle details that bring it all together.
