Bye-bye Beiber fever?: The Grammy’s in Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

The Grammy’s were a sad event for Justin Bieber fans. The 16-year-old artist seemed to be a sure win for the 53rd Annual Grammy Award for “Best New Artist.” Alas, the award went to young jazz bassist/singer Esperanza Spalding…and the teenage girls of the world heave a collective sigh of despair.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, the nation has recently been suffering from a little epidemic lovingly referred to as Bieber fever. Bieber has exploded onto the pop culture scene with hits like “Baby” and “Somebody to Love”. Truth be told, his songs are not just catchy dance tunes but his lyrics reflect dramatic life experiences well beyond his years.

At least Bieber fans were given some happiness before the astounding loss. His performance with Usher and Jayden Smith got rave reviews and had the crowd on its feet with a standing ovation by the end. Not to worry, I’m sure Bieber fever isn’t going away anytime soon. If anything, Bieber will most likely work twice as hard for a Grammy next year!

Amidst this heartbreaking news, there were some sighs of relief at the Grammy’s this year. The indie-rock band Arcade Fire won “Album of the Year” and accepted it by playing another song. Not a half bad acceptance speech and the crowd sure seemed appreciative. John Mayer, Norah Jones, and Keith Urban delivered a perfect rendition of Dolly Parton’s classic song “Jolene”. Those voices just seemed to be made for each other.

Perhaps one of the most memorable moments of the night was, of course, Lady Gaga’s wardrobe choice. It’s no secret that Lady Gaga is known for breaking the rules of fashion with her bold outfits, make-up and hairstyles. That girl would try to make a microwave hat the next big thing. Well, she’s not far off. Ms. Gaga decided to grace the Grammy’s inside an egg, perhaps symbolic of her radio hit “Born This Way.”  It’s just as it sounds, ladies. Can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!

Every year America is rocked with the cultural event of the Grammy’s. We laugh, we cry, we dance, we sing, we ask why Justin Bieber didn’t win an award and why Lady Gaga decided to dress like a chicken. Next year just seems too far away…
