Fashion in the Forest: The Unspoken Rule

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Look around campus: what do you see?

Besides the typical hustle and bustle of the school day (or the thousands of bees flying around everywhere, I might add) you are probably going to see a universal trend in outfits across the school. Now that fall is here, collegiette attire has shifted into sweaters, boots, and more often than not, leggings.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love leggings just as mush as the next girl. They are comfortable and easy to wear—especially on those days when you’re scrambling to throw an outfit together. However, as comfy as leggings can be, many people seem to misuse or over-wear them. So, before throwing on your leggings and heading to class, try to remember these few tips:

1. Make sure your top covers your butt!

If not, you risk your underwear lines showing. be careful to choose a top that fully covers your bum. You could opt to wear a big sweater or flannel, a dress, or a long top to pair with your leggings.

2. Be careful with see-through leggings.

Aside from the obvious reasons why you don’t want see-through leggings, sometimes you don’t realize they are see-through. So, save yourself the embarrassment and try walking around/bending in front of the mirror to check the opaqueness of the leggings. Switch to skinny pants or even change the outfit because see-through bottoms are always a no-no.

3. Do NOT substitute for pants!

You have probably heard this many times, but just a friendly reminder, LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS!!!!!!!!! Leggings are not advertised nor sold as pants in stores and therefore should not be worn as such. While this ties back to making sure your top is fully covering your butt, remember that leggings were designed to be like an extra layer for your outfit, so don’t make them a main piece.

So next time you are in a rush to get out the door, keep these three points in mind when you are considering leggings as a choice for the day.
