Freshmen Problems: A ‘Delayed’ Rush Reflection

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Spring Rush gave me the chance to meet girls who I might otherwise not have had the chance to meet.

With not being thrown into a sorority right off the bat as college began in August, I was lucky enough to get to meet a variety of girls, some who were planning to rush and others who were not. I was able to bond with my hall mates (shout out to my fourth floor gals!) and make some dank (‘scuse my Chicago slang) memories with them (watching The Voice on Monday nights, having a Secret Santa exchange, ordering mass orders of Cookout milkshakes during the week at midnight). My besties all live a few doors down from me which has made deciding what to wear out on a Friday night that much more convenient (not to mention the nights spent eating chocolate covered almonds and having heart to hearts sprawled out on the floor). If I was rushed into a sorority at the beginning of my college career, I might not have had the chance to really get to know these girls and have such awesome times with them so far.

Spring Rush gave me the opportunity to try my hand at new clubs and activities.

Since I wasn’t involved in a sorority (yet), I could try out a couple of the millions of clubs offered. Running track and doing cheerleading in high school, I opted to challenge myself to try a sport I have never tried before: rugby. I knew close to nothing about that sport until I joined, and I have absolutely loved it! I also write for Her Campus and volunteer as a mentor to seventh grade girls every other week and was accepted into a leadership training program. By having the chance to explore myself and my interests in the beginning of my college career, I was able to learn more about myself about what I like and what I don’t. Now I can channel my time and energy into the organizations that I have enjoyed and make room for all the fun that comes with being in a sorority!

Spring Rush allowed me to get to know the girls in the different sororities.

At tailgates. In classes. During club meetings. I met so many girls in all the different sororities on campus during first semester. I got to make some new friends and get a feel for the vibe of the various sisterhoods. I felt like I had more information going into Rush after having an idea of the personalities of the different sororities and then I didn’t feel as Rushed going into Rush.

Above all, I’m glad I had first semester to get my feet firmly planted on the ground in college. I firmly believe that delayed (spring) Rush is better, and am glad we have it at Wake.
