At Her Campus Wake Forest, we are always impressed with students who can balance multiple organizations, obligations, and passions with a heavy course load. So, when we get the chance to feature students who have found a way to fuse these together, we are more than impressed! This week, Campus Celebrity is featuring two students who are members of the organization Greeks Go Green at Wake Forest. Meet Avery Kelly (’17) and Devon Brown (’17)! Not only do they collaborate together as representatives of the Kappa Beta Gamma sorority for Greeks Go Green, they are also roommates!Â
Here at Wake Forest, the Office of Sustainability runs an organization called Greeks Go Green that brings together representatives of fraternities and sororities to support environmentally friendly initiatives and raise awareness about sustainability on campus. Avery and Devon represent their sorority and work with other members of Greek life to make Wake Forest more environmentally sustainable. Avery told HC that she got involved because, “Sustainability has always been important to my family and I. Giving back to the environment has always been a priority for my mom, and she’s definitely rubbed off on me over the years. Also, I took a writing class on sustainability last spring that really inspired me to get involved some way at school.”
So how does Greeks Go Green involve students at Wake Forest? Avery and Devon report that sororities have been encouraged to use eco-friendly cotton for bid day t-shirts this year in January! Avery informed us that, “The process of making cotton t-shirts is really wasteful. The average t-shirt requires 2,700 liters of water and each sorority purchases roughly 200 shirts on bid day. By using a more eco-friendly t-shirt line we can drastically decrease the amount of water that goes to waste.”
In addition to the t-shirt initiative debuting next semester, Greeks Go Green invites guest speakers to Wake Forest to educate the entire student body about sustainability. Among the many guest speakers, Wake Forest was fortunate enough to have Dr. Vandana Shiva to address the challenges of feeding a global population. Her lecture, “Make Every Bite Count,” was a huge success, as her status as a political activist attracted students from every discipline. Greeks Go Green also promoted the event by rewarding a free Chipotle burrito card to the sorority or fraternity with the highest attendance!
At Her Campus, we love the idea of multiple organizations collaborating to make Wake a better place. Great job Avery and Devon, and all members of Greeks Go Green! Keep up the great work!
