Her Impact: Summer Sun & Service Fun

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Exams are almost over, and Wake students are getting ready to disperse for summer break. But leaving Wake doesn’t mean we can start slacking – we must keep our “Pro Humanitate” spirit over the summer, too!  There’s no reason why any collegiette™ can’t become two shades tanner while also helping to make a difference in her community.  Here at Her Impact, we’ve come up with some easy ideas to get involved while still enjoying the summer sun!

Bake for Your Heroes
Firefighters have some of the most grueling work schedules. Additionally, wildfires are especially common in the summer, and wearing that heavy uniform can be tiring. So why not thank our hometown heroes with some homemade baked goods?  Cupcake boxes usually serve a dozen, and I don’t think our swimsuit bods would appreciate all that frosting! So have fun baking, and give the rest to your local fire department!

Beach Clean Up
While you’re soaking up the sun, bring a plastic bag and collect all the trash around you.  Help protect our oceans and birds by cleaning up the debris caught in the sand!

Garage Sale Relief
Clean out your closet to start fresh this summer!  Stop by Plato’s Closet and sell back your clothes for money you can use to benefit your favorite charity!  Or donate your clothes straight to the Salvation Army for families in need. Local thrift stores are always eager to accept donations.

Letters for Soldiers
Make a card for a soldier online!  Just follow this website http://www.forgottensoldiers.org/write-a-soldier/ to let them know you are thankful for your freedom!  Even better: have a letter-writing party and made homemade letters yourself!

Movie Night for a Cause
Have a movie night at your house featuring a social justice documentary! This is a great way to spread the word about an issue or problem going on in the world that you feel passionate about.  You can sell tickets to the movie or pass around a donations jar at the end.  Some ideas include an Under the Sea themed movie night featuring the Disney documentary, Oceans, with all your donations benefitting the World Wildlife Federation.  Or you can have an Indian Bollywood party showing Born into Brothels which features the stories of children of prostitutes given cameras and art lessons – have the benefits go to Kids with Cameras.

So don’t slack off and tan all day, collegiettes™!  Just because you’re done with your busy life on campus doesn’t mean you should stop making an impact!
