How to Fashion Friday: How to Incorporate NYFW Trends into Your Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

For the couture-obsessed collegiette, New York Fashion Week is one of the most anticipated times of the year. Every season I look forward to seeing the pictures of some of my favorite designers’ shows and reading about the latest trends. However, as a college student, fitting haute, couture trends into your daily wardrobe can be hard. Here are some of my favorite trends and how to wear them around campus!

Contrast Collars

Contrast collars were one of the most popular trends on this season’s catwalks. Collared shirts can be seen everywhere around campus, so change yours up a bit by wearing a contrasted collar.  Personally, I love a plain shirt with a patterned collar, but you can also try mixed patterns or mixed solids. Instead of the Alexander Wang version shown on this model, try this Liberty of London pattern from J. Crew or this cheetah collar from Urban Outfitters. Pair either top with jeans and your daily outfit has a little extra flair!

Pastels

What would a spring/summer show be without pastels? Personally, I love the soft, femininity of pastel colors. This baby blue outfit from Rachel Zoe Collection creates an effortless and ethereal feel, and it is a perfect color for spring. If you don’t feel comfortable in head-to-toe pastels, try pairing a pastel shirt like this J. Crew blouse with a neutral skirt, or wear a pastel dress like this one from Lilly Pulitzer.

Crop Tops

Somehow, the crop top has managed to hang on for another season. While many of us thought that the crop top would be short lived, designers have decided to tell us otherwise. One of the most important tips about wearing a crop top is making sure to balance your skin to fabric and tight to loose ratios. If you’re wearing a tight crop top, wear a loosely fitting bottom or a tight high-waisted skirt, so not as much skin is showing. If you’re wearing a looser fitting crop top, tight jeans can be appropriate, as long as they’re not too low rise. Many of the models in the Alberta Ferretti show walked in crop tops with billowing floor length skirts. This bright top from Topshop is a great color for spring and is the perfect length so as not to show too much skin.

Metallics

Whether you are dressing up or down, metallic colors are a fun way to spice up your outfit.  Many designers took risks with their collections this season by incorporating full outfits in different shades of metallic colors and I love it. To make it more ready to wear, try wearing a metallic belt or shoes. Metallic oxfords are a great staple for the fashion-forward collegiette; I really want a pair to add to my closet! This Tory Burch dress/coat/masterpiece is amazing, and is definitely one of my favorite looks from this season’s shows!

However you incorporate fashion trends into your daily wardrobe, remember to take risks and enjoy trying new trends!

Hey collegiettes! I'm Arianna and I am a freshman at Wake Forest University. I love all things preppy, but also like to incorporate trends into my wardrobe. I plan to major in communications and possibly minor in French. I can't wait to begin my Her Campus career and hope you enjoy my blog posts!
