How to Spring into Springtime Fashion!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Here in Winston-Salem, springtime is just around the corner. Even though it’s technically still February, the first joyous shouts of afternoon darty-ers have already been heard across campus the past couple of weekends, and we’re all starting to trade in Uggs for some less furry footwear.

But let’s be real here: it’s not nearly warm enough yet to go full-on summer with your wardrobe choices. We’ve all done it, but this spring, don’t be that overeager girl walking to your 8 AM in a tank, jorts, and flip flops when it’s actually still less than 60 degrees outside. Springtime is such a stellar season, when the weather’s warmed up enough that the trek back from Scales isn’t so frigid, but North Carolina hasn’t quite gotten up to boiling temps yet. So, embrace it! There are plenty of ways to create outfits for this wonderful in-between season that don’t scream summer, but are still way cuter than the heavy sweaters we’ve had to pile on all winter.

  • Be creative with your winter wardrobe: One way to handle the in-between spring weather is to adapt your winter wardrobe to the higher temperature. Instead of tucking your skinny jeans into your wintry boots, pull some flats out of the back of your closet. There are always Tory’s classic Revas or the ever-popular Sperry’s in a variety of colors and patterns, but one delightful alternative are some moccasins. Minnetonka makes really cute suede and leather mocs with all different embellishments, like beading and fringe.

Junior Padgett Vaughn’s skinny jeans & cardigan look goes from winter-dry to springtime-ready with a switch from leather boots into gold ballerina flats

  • Show some skin! If you’re getting sick of day after day jeans jeans jeans and want to show some leg, it’s now finally warm enough to throw on a skirt or dress without the hassle of tights – Yesss! To keep it from being too summery, wear your skirts with a long sleeved top, or throw on a little cardigan over your dresses. You can also keep your boots on with your skirts and dresses to keep from going full-on summer mode – and to keep your legs warm if those crazy winds (which are always creeping up in the forecast) pick up as you walk across the quad! I wear my Frye cowboy boots with every outfit – from shorts and pants to dresses and minis.

Vaughn’s floral print dress, perfect for summer, is a perfect match for in-between weather with the addition of a cream scarf and brown leather boots.

So for the next month or two, while we’re just starting to get our first taste of spring, use these ideas or some of your own to create the perfect “I love spring!” ensembles. Just please don’t stay stuck in your winter wardrobe or jump too quickly to your summer stuff. Enjoy everything spring: from the comeback of darties, to Springfest, and being able to do work (or procrastinate) on the Quad!
