If you tuned into the 2024 Grammy Awards, you got the pleasure of witnessing Dua Lipa open the show with a mashup of her recent hit, “Houdini,” and a teaser of her unreleased (at the time) song, “Training Season,” both off her upcoming third studio album. In honor of “Training Season” dropping on February 15, 2024, and it being a complete bop, here is why I think Lipa is truly one of the best pop performers of this generation.
First, the song is incredibly danceable, and Lipa showed in her Grammys performance that she is more than willing to capitalize on this. Lipa managed to deliver her signature vocals while being lifted, flipped, and spun upon a cage-like cube by her backup dancers. Later in the performance, she showcased her own dance skills in the breakdown of “Houdini.”
The performance, as well Lipa’s most recent tour, The Future Nostalgia Tour, was choreographed by Charm La’Donna. If you may remember, Lipa went viral in 2017 for a meme-able performance featuring dance moves many people called lazy. Some even say the meme popularized the now frequently used phrase, “go girl give us nothing.” So in short, it was not great. However, Lipa does not just have La’Donna choreograph her performances; she has also worked hard with her for years on improving her dancing. As someone that was lucky enough to attend The Future Nostalgia Tour, I can say that her hard work paid off in spades, and Lipa gave fans a full on show.
Aside from the admirable work Lipa puts into her dance skills, her songs are genuinely addicting. I love pop music– always have and always will– and I think the best pop songs are those that you truly never get tired of. I am often a victim of finding a song that I like, playing it to death for a couple of weeks, and then getting tired of hearing it. However, I find that Lipa’s songs never fall into this trap, no matter how much I play them. If I am in need of a good strut, workout, study-boost, or just want to feel good, I can always count on her music.
So, when Lipa’s new album eventually comes out (I am begging for it to be released soon), don’t be surprised if it comes with iconic performances and songs that scream pop perfection. I truly think her music will stand the test of time as staples of the pop genre, and I am excited to see what she does next.
