Sophomore Struggles

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Sophomore Strugs

Welcome back to Wake everyone! I know it has only been a few weeks, but one month into school and I’m already realizing the struggles of being a sophomore in the Forest.

1. Declaring your major.

Remember freshman year when your only worries were FYS and securing a pledge driver? I miss that. Instead, nowadays you have to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life. I don’t know about you, but I would rather wait 43 hours for a pledge driver in the pouring rain than think about my post-grad future.

2. Sophomore parking.

Sophomore parking is, literally, purgatory. It is not the football stadium hell, nor is it the on-campus heaven; it’s just lodged somewhere in the middle. It’s close enough that you can justify daily Target runs, but far enough that you can’t get your Target haul back to your dorm room with any relative success.

3. You’re not the baby anymore.

Gone are the days of being pardoned for missing a homework assignment or for illegal parking. This is the big leagues kid, you’ve got to pay to play.

Yes, sophomore year comes with some new struggles, but it also comes with some new benefits.

4. Friends.

One of the best parts of returning to Wake, as a sophomore, is being reunited with your friends. You don’t have to worry about making friends and fitting in like you did last year, because you’ve already made some. The only thing left to do is make more!

5. Living on the Quad.

Living on the quad is, arguably, the best for a multitude of reasons. One being the fact that you are living with your classmates and upperclassmen—not just freshman, yay! Another reason living on the quad is the best is because you are pretty much at the center of campus. Nothing is too far away, so you can’t make excuses for not hitting the gym or stopping by a friend’s room.

6. You know what you are doing.

The biggest source of anxiety for me last year was the unknown. Everything was new, and I had no idea what I was doing. Now that I’ve been through the wringer, I know what to expect coming back for sophomore year—with a few surprises here and there.
