Have you been so busy with #WorkForest that you haven’t had any time to keep up with the news? Here are some tidbits from this week to keep you updated and in the know!
Shutdown, shut down. This week we finally saw the end of the several-weeks long government shutdown. Lawmakers in Congress were able to make a last minute deal to reopen the government and avoid a default on the national debt. Things were pretty tense in Washington this week as a credit-rating company, Fitch, put the U.S. “AAA” rating on a “rating watch negative.” This worried a lot of people that a default could hurt the global economy but thank goodness for some 11th hour negotiating.

The measure passed by Congress and signed by the President funds the government through mid-January and mandates a full budget plan to be available by December. No worries though, more fights to come this fall when they try to figure out how to deal with this again. Let’s hope the panda cam won’t ever disappear again.
What you missed at Wake Forest this week… Dallas Mavericks superstar, Dirk Nowitski, made an appearance at The Old Fourth Street Filling Station this past Friday night. The basketball all-star was in town for a preseason game in Greensboro. Too bad you didn’t make it over to Fourth Street this weekend.

RUH ROH. This week a study came out that claims Oreos are just as addictive as cocaine. Experiments were done on lab rats, which experienced the same types of neurological stimuli that come from using cocaine when eating Oreos. So next time your Oreo goes for a dip in the milk glass, don’t expect to eat just one. Get ready to get “double stuffed.”
But who will be our Christian Grey?!? This week actor Charlie Hunnam pulled out of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie role. The studio blames his TV schedule for his departure but rumors are swirling around that he wasn’t getting paid enough for his liking. The role has seemed to be plagued from the beginning, as many famous male stars passed over the role before it got to the Sons of Anarchy celebrity. Do you think this movie will ever get made?
Goin’ to the chapel… New Jersey Governor Chris Christie asked the state Supreme Court to put a ruling that allows for same-sex marriages on hold while the court considers an appeal. However, the New Jersey Supreme Court denied this motion, and will allow same-sex couples to start marrying there on Monday, October 21st.
Jehhh. This week President Obama nominated former Pentagon Lawyer, Jeh Johnson, to be the next Secretary of Homeland Security. If confirmed, Johnson will replace current Secretary Janet Napolitano.
R.I.P. Representative Bill Young (R-FL) passed away this week, as the longest serving Republican member of the House of Representatives. Rep. Young spent much of his time devoted to defense-specific appropriations and the armed services. The Congressman was not seeking reelection in 2014 and there will be a special election to fill his seat for Florida’s 13th congressional district. You will be missed, Bill.
