I don’t know about you, but I have always enjoyed a good cry. There’s something so cathartic about locking your door, telling your parents to shut up, and heading to Spotify to instantly turn on the waterworks. Though it’s a little early in the semester to be stress crying about classes or finals or the boy on the first floor, there’s always a reason to cry about something, even if it’s just because the fro-yo machine at BD is broken again. So, here are the songs that never fail to make me shed a tear.
1. All I Want, Kodaline
You may recognize this song from the ultimate tearjerker, The Fault in Our Stars (John Green, you are one talented SOB). It starts off slow, and when it picks up you know that the real grotesque sobbing can commence. You know the kind, the one where your mascara begins to mix with tears that are mixed with snot and you basically resemble an angsty zombie.
2. The Scientist, Coldplay
This song gets me everytime. I don’t know whether it’s Chris Martin’s silky pipes, or the fact that whenever I hear this song I think of that one episode of Glee where everyone was singing this while staring off into the distance of the auditorium (I know that’s most episodes, but still).
3. Make You Feel My Love, Adele
This song was also on Glee. (Fun fact: my Bat Mitzvah was Glee themed.) But beyond that, this is Adele covering a Bob Dylan song, so just one beautiful artist covering another. This song tugs at the heartstrings, and is the perfect accompaniment to a big pint of Ben and Jerry’s.
4. Skinny Love, Birdy
Birds has hands down one of the most beautiful and captivating voices I have ever heard. This version of the song is even better than the Bon Iver one, in this humble writer’s opinion. This song goes well with some candles and a book of angsty poetry about heartbreak.
5. You’re Beautiful, James Blunt
THIS. SONG. NEVER. GETS. OLD. Honestly, I don’t know what James Blunt is up to these days, but I may go track him down so he can live in Umrath with me and just play this song whenever I have a bad day.
