If you don’t like food then stop reading now…
If you’re still reading then great! Because below is a list of some of my favorite dishes in St. Louis and where to find them. Enjoy!
When you need to start the day off right: Best Breakfast
Bacon # 3 – Rooster
Just the fact that they have multiple bacon-crepe options should be enough to get you to Rooster. But the #3 with oven dried tomatoes and goat cheese makes it a must.
Banana Bread French Toast – Oceano Bistro
A little known fact for Sunday mornings when every brunch place in Clayton is a 20 minute wait: Just across and up the street from Half and Half, Oceano is serving up a Sunday brunch with some of the best French toast around.
Signature Maryland Benedict – Wild Flower
Take a trip to this cozy little restaurant for a brunch menu loaded with more eggs Benedict options then you’ve ever heard of. Order any one of them and you can’t go wrong, but eggs Benedict over crab cakes never tasted so right.
When things are better between bread: Best Sandwich
The Brisket Sandwich – Winslow’s Home
Winslow’s Home has an entire menu full of unique and delicious options. That being said, I know that every time I go there I will regret not getting this sandwich. And that’s really all I have to say.
The Frenchie – Companion
The turkey & brie combo has never been as delicious as when it’s smothered in house made honey dijon and loaded onto fresh, crusty Parisian bread. Another sandwich I would regret not getting despite the other quality options on Companion’s newly re-vamped menu.
When the entrée isn’t coming fast enough: Best Appetizer
Dátiles Relienos – Modesto
Translation: BACON-wrapped dates stuffed with Cabrales CHEESE. This dish, along with many others at this tapas restaurant on the Hill, is worth the struggle of pronouncing your order.
Donuts – Half and Half
A seat at Half and Half on weekend mornings is worth its weight in gold. But while you’re waiting for one, order a cup of these little citrus-and-cinnamon sugar bites of heaven from the counter.
When carnivores attack: Best Steak
Filet Mignon – Herbie’s Vintage 72
Over the past 40 years Herbie’s has served some of the finest steaks in St. Louis. Served over gold potatoes with spinach and wild mushroom sauce, this signature entrée is no exception.
Steak Frites – Brasserie by Niche
Peanut butter and jelly, bacon and eggs, milk and cookies, steak and fries; some foods are just meant to be together. And if you want your steak and fries done right, go to the French.
When you’re feeling posh: Best Sushi
Crispy Roll – Drunken Fish
If you think you don’t like eel, then you’ve either never had it or didn’t know you did. This roll—tuna , eel and avocado, tempura battered, and topped with eel sauce and masago—will keep you coming back to this CWE hotspot for many birthday dinners to come.
Oh My God Roll – Tani
Is all of the sushi sounding the same to you? Are you yawning at the options? Then why not spice things up and light your sushi on fire?! The Oh My God roll got its name for a reason, plus it’s delish.
When you’re sick of the Midwest: Best Ethnic
Sesame Chicken – Yen Ching
Passing by it you’d never guess, but this modest little Chinese restaurant across from the Galleria has been voted best Chinese in St. Louis by multiple STL publications, including the Riverfront Times. But the best part is they DELIVER TO WASHU HELLO.
Aji de Gallina – Mango
If you’d like a taste of authentic Peruvian cuisine, then check out this swanky downtown hotspot. I’ll leave this dish as a surprise in the hopes that you’ll go see for yourself. All I’m saying is it’s worth it!
Nachos Grande – Nacho Mama’s
Ok, so Tex-Mex isn’t exactly foreign, but I wasn’t going to not put Nacho Mama’s on the list, so it’s foreign enough. Really anything on this authentic menu is good, but you can’t go wrong with the restaurant’s signature.
When the craving strikes: Best Dessert
Capirote – Barcelona
This Clayton restaurant is an institution when it comes to tapas-style dining, but don’t get too full of small plates before dessert! This warm bread pudding with caramel sauce is worth eating to the point of pain.
Chocolate Phyllo – Momo’s
Chocolate lovers, be warned: after eating this dessert you may never be able to love again. Momo’s combines white, milk, dark, and semi sweet chocolate into a lava flow out of flaky phyllo pastry smothered in chocolate sauce in this sinfully decadent dessert.
So there were just a few of my favorites, check them out if you want or get out there, explore, and find favorites of your own. Happy eating!
