Looking to update your wardrobe to match the crunchy, colorful leaves and the crisp air? Look no further than the thrift shop. Follow these steps and you’ll find the perfect clothing to spice up your wardrobe this fall inexpensively and sustainably.
Â
1. Choose Where to Go
In-Person: For those of you in St. Louis, Avalon is a great thrift store that’s just a short walk from campus on The Loop. Masks are required and dressing rooms are available to try on before you purchase.
Digitally: Many people run individual accounts on Instagram where they do the thrifting for you and curate collections for you to purchase from! This is a great way to support small businesses and have clothes delivered to you at your house.
Â
2. Look for The Highlights
Sweaters, T-shirts (men’s and women’s section!), Cozy Sweatshirts/ Crewnecks, Fun Jackets, and Skirts are my go-to’s because they are perfect for layering in the fall. Thrifting is fun because of the wide variety of styles in the store. Sorting through the wacky, unique items is fun, and you always end up with something unique!
Â
3. Try it On
If you’re comfortable, trying on in the store’s dressing rooms is a good way to ensure you don’t purchase anything that you don’t end up liking.
Â
4. Wash your Clothes
Follow the washing instructions on the tags inside the clothes and wash anything you purchased before you wear it.
Â
5. Make Adjustments
Love to embroider? Want to crop your new t-shirt? Follow an online tutorial to make any adjustments as needed and have fun with it!
Â
6. Style your outfit
Big t-shirt and jeans, a sweater and a skirt, a crewneck and leggings – the possibilities are endless. You’ll receive so many compliments on your unique outfit!
