Meet this week’s Campus Celeb, Lexi Levin. This alumna is funny, outgoing, and always the first one to start a friendly conversation. Not to mention, she used to be a Campus Correspondent for our Her Campus chapter! Lexi is currently leading the life of a busy New Yorker as a Production Assistant at Bloomberg Television, but what’s even more impressive is what she manages to do on the side.
Year of graduation: 2014
Past campus involvement: Her Campus, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Wash U News, Campus Interview Team
Current job: Production Assistant at Bloomberg Television.
Are you enjoying your current position? What does your job entail? I’m actually loving my job! I work on three of Bloomberg TV’s morning shows. I research and pitch stories, make graphics for different segments (photos, charts, videos), greet and prep guests that come on the shows, write for various segments, and learn how to produce. The position is perfect for someone who just graduated from college because I have real responsibilities of my own, but am still learning a ton.
I heard you just started a daily news email called The Front Page. Can you tell us a little bit about it? The Front Page is an email I send out every morning at 5AM. It’s compilation of the ten top news stories I think people need to know and definitely do not want to miss. It’s easy to read and incredibly informative. The best part of getting it? I do the dirty work. Those who subscribe get a free pass on reading the news for the day. I choose 10 very different stories, ranging in topic from national and international, to tech to health to finance to diplomacy and even to the absurd. I come up with funny headlines for each and then summarize the story in about 3-5 bullet points. I often include hyperlinks so people who want to know more about each story can real some full articles.
How did you come up with the idea for The Front Page? Well, I work in a newsroom, so it’s literally my job to know what’s going on in the world- all the time. And I work crazy hours- 4AM to noon- so I get to know the news before my friends even wake up. I know how hard it is for people to keep up on everything going on in the world, especially if it isn’t their actual job to do so. So, I wanted to help my friends stay in the know, too.
Do you have any plans for expansion? Not really. Well, not yet, at least. I have a little over 250 subscribers, and would definitely welcome more (you can subscribe here!). I write and send The Front Page every morning because I truly enjoy it, but if someone wants to pay me for it, I’m down!
What is your dream job? I have two. First, I think the ultimate job- without question- would be to snag Guy Fieri’s position on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Second, I would love to eventually write for a Tina Fey or Chelsea Handler type. For now, I’m pretty happy!
What’s your best advice for people looking to enter the TV/media industry? My best advice is to explore a variety of internships. I did news, magazine, and creative TV (Discovery Channel). Also, it’s very important to connect with older people who have jobs you’re interested in. They want to help you and hire people who they know and believe in.
