Sydney Rabin 2017

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

Do you like dancing, food, music and/or helping people? If the answer to any of the above is yes, make sure to come to the DUC this Saturday at 2 pm for Dance Marathon! Read on to learn more about this incredible event from our truly inspiring celeb Sydney Rabin!

Year: Junior

Major/minor: PNP major (cog neuro track), Global Health and the Environment minor, Pre-med

On campus involvement: Slaughter Project Dance Company, Synapse, AEPhi sorority

What is your involvement with Dance Marathon? This is my second year on the executive board and I’m the Entertainment Chair so I help plan the event.

When and why did you first get involved? I first got involved my freshman year because my WUSA was on the executive board and she encouraged my whole freshman floor to go. It seemed interesting to me because it involved two things I’m passionate about, dance and medicine, and I went to the event and ended up falling in love.

Favorite thing about Dance Marathon? My favorite thing about Dance Marathon is that you get to put a face to the organization that you’re helping, which is something that makes Dance Marathon so unique. Several families (called miracle families) that have been helped by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals come to the event and tell their stories, so you actually get to see where your money is going and how it’s helping people.

Most fun Dance Marathon memory? Getting to do the “Dancellor” with Chancellor Wrighton and his wife at last year’s event. The man’s got some moves!

What can we expect to see at this year’s DM? Anything new? We have awesome performance groups, a miracle kid talent show, Stressbusters, and SO much good food! Like a ridiculous amount of good food (if that doesn’t motivate you to come I don’t know what will!)

What is the most inspiring story you’ve heard since becoming part of the miracle children’s lives? Oh that’s a tough one because all of their stories are so amazing! One of the most inspiring people I’ve met is probably Zach Brock. He’s suffered through two different types of cancer, one when he was four and another one four years after that, but he’s been in remission for several years now which is so exciting. Zach’s been to twenty something dance marathons and he’s done so much to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and everybody should come listen to him speak at our event this Saturday. He is so positive, brave, and resilient and there is no way I could have handled what he went through even half as well as he did.

Raised in New York City, Becki Zeuner is a sophomore at Washington University in St. Louis. When she isn't telling you her standard fun fact about her fifteen (five) seconds of fame in a Saturday Night Live skit, she's most likely procrastinating on homework, eating DUC sushi or watching trashy television.
Rachel is a junior in Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis. When she's not using her status as a twin as her obvious fun fact, she'll probably tell you that she loves photography, concerts, travel, Buzzfeed, and slaving over clever Instagram captions.
