Students can be heard quoting Made in TYO’s song “Uber” as they slip into Ubers of all shapes and sizes on Shepley Drive. Uber has only been operating for a year in St. Louis. Coming from New York City, I don’t think I could imagine living without it. Uber makes dinner runs to the Loop and downtown Clayton super easy and fast; but what St. Louis Ubers’ lack in bottled water and phone chargers, they make up for with drivers with amazing stories and great personalities. For most drivers, Uber is not their only job and they love telling WashU students about their other jobs and family lives.

One downside of Uber’s relatively new arrival on the streets of St. Louis is that there still is not an abundance of drivers, often resulting in high surge prices and long wait times. Coming home late at night with a couple of friends can cause $20 rides to skyrocket to over $100 if you’re not paying attention to the heightened rates. In our desperation to just get home and kick off our painful heels, we are more likely to agree to crazy surge prices and wake up the next morning with an alarming receipt. (And if you haven’t noticed, Uber does not accept Bear Bucks.)

Although most of us are loyal to the Uber lifestyle, there are other ways to get where you want to go without breaking the bank. Enterprise’s Carshare has a location on campus where you can rent a car for a $5 hourly rate or $60 daily rate. This option is perfect for freshmen without cars or for quick trips to the grocery store. However, you lose the friendly and often comedic driver passenger interaction. Oh, and I guess we could always walk….
