4 Tips for Improving Confidence

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Washington chapter.

Confidence is difficult to grasp and even more difficult to keep. In a society fueld by comparing yourself with others’ careers, bodies, and lives, confidence is more elusive than ever. Building confidence is key, however, to successful work and social endeavors. Making a good impression in a presentation or to your study group goes a long way in your path to success, and it helps your own sense of self-worth, too!

Check in With Yourself

The term “fake it ’till you make it” seems to be the most common piece of advice given to people who seek confidence. While this works to a degree, a self-grown confidence can create a more solid foundation for that confidence to grow. Checking in with yourself in a calming environment can have this effect. Try to discern the roots of self-conciousness and self-doubt, whether it be a fear of failure or embarrassing experience, and work through them using the healthy coping mechanisms that work for you. Once you accept you and your ideas have worth and merit, it will be a whole new world!

Value Your Time

This ties in closely with self-worth. It’s important to realize that your time is valuable. Prioritizing the things that are important to you will give you a sense of purpose. It also serves as confidence by proxy; if it’s too great a step to have full confidence, valuing your time can be a good first step to realizing your worth!

Face Your Fears

Facing your career/social fears shows you that you CAN navigate through difficult situations, and that the outcome you fear is not the end of the world. Taking big risks can be intimidating at first, so it may be easier to start with doing one thing that’s challenging but has slightly less risk.

Be Prepared

Being prepared for a certain situation boosts confidence as preparation decreases self-doubt and calms the nerves.

Confidence is something everyone struggles with. The key is to have patience and never give up!
