The Her Campus Washington Chapter held a Halloween Makeup Masterclass on Thursday, October 29 from 6 pm to 7 pm. The event consisted of attendees following along with a makeup tutorial of their choice in separate breakout rooms, voting for the best artist of each look, then deciding the ultimate winners from the three breakout room favorites. Costumes were strongly encouraged and makeup skills were not required. Thirteen Her Campus members from all different teams (writing, social media, events) and grade levels met up on zoom to have a fun night of creativity. It was a great way to destress from the chaos of midterm season, but also another way to get in the Halloween spirit in a socially distant manner.
The three looks that were chosen to be recreated were the skull, spiderweb, and euphoria. While each look was drastically different from one another, they were all still something you might have seen sporting on Halloween if we were in more normal circumstances. Attendees were sent into three different breakout rooms with one person in charge of pausing the video after each step so that everyone could grab their makeup and follow along for 2-3 minutes. They were taught in a way that would allow beginners to easily follow along, but still provide a challenge to talented individuals.
Skull Makeup Look (e.l.f cosmetics):
You will need: a primer, an eyeshadow palette, a pencil brush, eyebrow pencil, eyeliner pencil, a beauty blender, and concealerÂ
In the video, Robert Green, an editorial makeup artist in New York, is shown doing a skull makeup look on Britney for Halloween. First, he goes in with the elf poreless putty primer and rubs it on her eyelids. Next, he takes the mad for matte eyeshadow palette and chooses a brown shade, which he stamps all over the eye, then blends out. He uses a little pencil brush from elf to apply some color on the lower lashline. He goes back into the same pallet, but this time dips into the black, building the color from the outer corner with a stamping technique. He then adds an orange color on top of all the other colors. He uses the ultra-precise brown pencil to fill in her eyebrows and make the shape more pronounced by creating light strokes in the direction of her hair. He uses the waterproof gel eyeliner pencil on her nose to draw an outline and then color it in. Robert grabs a pencil brush to blend it out in order to make it appear like a shadow. He takes the 16-hour camo concealer to cover up her lips. He takes the eyeliner pencil and lays it inside of the mouth then drags it out. With the model’s mouth closed he runs the pencil inside of the lips. He adds in vertical lines to create teeth and then he reapplies the concealer in certain spots to make her teeth more distinct.
Spiderweb Makeup Look (Beauty Bay):
You will need: mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, eye shadow brush
In the video, the makeup artist goes in with Beauty Bay eyn bright matte 9 palette, applying an orange shade of eyeshadow on her eyelids and her waterline. Then she takes the Nabla serial liner, using it to get a winged eyeliner look. Below her eyes, she draws three curved lines then connects them to form a web design. She does the winged eyeliner on the other eye, then she goes back and draws a vertical line with a dot at the end and three curved lines on each side to represent a spider. Lastly, she finishes off the look with a coat of mascara on the eyelashes.
Euphoria Makeup Look (Beauty Bay):Â
You will need: concealer, eyeshadow palettes, face mist spray, eyeshadow brush, colored eyeliner, mascara, and some fake lashes or gemstones if you want to go all-in
In the video, Erica creates a look inspired by the show Euphoria. She takes the Jouer high coverage liquid concealer and applies it on her eyelids then blends it out with a makeup brush. She grabs the Nabla soul blooming eyeshadow palette, taps into the shade “flowery” which she then uses on her eyelids. She takes the Linda Hallberg H2 glow face mist and sprays some of it on her eyeshadow brush, then dips into the shade garden gate which she applies in the center of her eyelid. She blends this out with the brush, then taps it on her eyelid with her finger. She repeats the same process with the shade anemone, but instead places it on her outer corner. Then she grabs the Beauty Bay bright matte palette and chooses the shade to apply on her lower lash line. She goes back to the original palette and uses the shade philosophy to her inner corner. She takes the Suva Beauty hydra liner watermelon felon and uses it as winged eyeliner. She uses Zoeva Graphic lash mascara to top off the look and some fake lashes. Lastly, she places Festival Face Ayla silver gemstone between her brows and eyelids. To top it off she adds a pink lip.

For me, as a new Her Campus member, I was a little bit intimated attending an event with upperclassmen from other teams who I had never met before. Surprisingly, I found the atmosphere of the zoom call to be extremely comfortable. In my breakout room, we all shared a little bit about ourselves, and it just so happened that I knew a familiar face. Remi Khan, another freshman on our social media team, was a friend from one of the classes I took prior to the quarter. We chose to recreate the spiderweb makeup look, and it was actually quite simple, only requiring four makeup products. But as someone who isn’t very talented with makeup with a very limited selection of products at my disposal, it was still a challenge to create the look. Despite not having all the products that I needed, I still had a great time and will be looking forward to more events in the future.
There was a great turnout with 13 HCUW members in attendance. An easy poll was used to determine the winner, with everyone casting their voting for their favorite looks. Tara Wilson, HCUW’s s Senior Editor, won in the main room with the skull look, and Emily Glenn, an HCUW events member, got second with the euphoria makeup look. They both will be receiving Starbucks gift cards as a reward for their artistry.
Stay tuned for more fun Her Campus events to come in the future!
