Music isn’t the only thing you can listen to while running.
You may have heard the word “podcast” and wondered what they are and why people are listening to them. Long story short, podcasts are like little radio shows that you can listen to on your phone (or any electronic device really) whenever you want. There are thousands of podcasts on thousands of topics out there, so there’s bound to be one just for you. Not sure where to start? Here a few of my suggestions:
Not Too Deep with Grace Helbig
Best for: Laughs
(Not Too Deep with Grace Helbig)
Grace Helbig, queen of the internet, graces listeners each week with a hilariously entertaining interview with a famous person. Her questions are never conventional (“Who would you most like to throw a handful of cold spaghetti at?”) and the answers are never expected, making for a laugh-filled hour. Each audio podcast is accompanied by challenge videos on YouTube, which, rest assured, are just as funny.
Lore
Best for: Scary Stories
Hosted by Aaron Mahnke, Lore tells the history of various mysterious legends. The scary part is that every story Mahnke tells is real. Topics include ghost ships, werewolves, people who were buried alive, and nearly every other thing that haunts your nightmares. Yes, it is as scary as it sounds.
Serial
Best for: True Crime Stories
Crime show fans, Serial is the podcast for you. Every season tells the story of a real-life crime while host Sarah Koenig tries her best to solve it alongside listeners. Last season told the story of Adnan Syed, who may or may not have killed his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. The second and current season is all about Bowe Bergdahl, who you may have heard of when he made national news for walking away from a U.S. Army outpost in 2009. The story is just beginning, so now’s the perfect time to get hooked.
Invisibilia
Best for: Blowing Your Mind
What’s it like to live without fear? How does it feel to be truly alone with your thoughts? Can expectations make a blind person see? If any of these questions sound interesting to you at all, check out Invisibilia. Hosted by Alix Spiegel and Lulu Miller, Invisibilia goes in-depth into the invisible world of the human mind. Episodes include “How to Become Batman”, “The Secret History of Thoughts”, and a number of others that will change the way you think about yourself (and the people around you) forever.
Stuff Mom Never Told You
Best for: Everything and Anything
Listening to Stuff Mom Never Told You will make you wish you had hosts Cristen Conger and Caroline Ervin for big sisters. This amazing podcast manages to be super interesting while covering almost every topic relevant to the world today. Topics include Taylor Swift, catcalling, fashion bloggers, STEM careers, online dating, and slut shaming, just to name a few. Each episode is a mix of laughs, anecdotes, feminism, history, and science, all meticulously researched by Conger and Ervin. Stuff Mom Never Told You also has its own YouTube channel where you can find hundreds of short videos talking about everything you’ve ever wanted to know (and some things you didn’t).
Don’t think you’re limited to these, look hard and I can guarantee that you’ll find the perfect podcast for you. Have fun podcasting!
