Don’t be fooled by this Campus Cutie’s broad shoulders and self-assured attitude – Doug Gleicher is a freshman. And you should take everything he says with a grain of salt. Except about his music, Upper West, that is. And don’t be offended by his tongue-in-cheek comments – from what I can tell, he really does enjoy the tobacco-free campus.
Hometown? New York City, NY. I was born at Mount Sinai Children’s Hospital, Floor 2.
Studying? Undeclared – but probably Ancient Law.
What do you want to do with that degree? Build a time machine…No, it’s not for a job, its just cool. I want to dress up and be a lawyer.
Activities on Campus? I’m on the baseball team. I play third base and I’m a good clubhouse guy, meaning I’m good for team morale. I get the spirits up; I get the heart pumping, the minds running; I stretch kids out.
Are you better than Greg [Greg, Doug’s older brother, is a junior on the baseball team]? Undeclared as of right now.
Where do you live on campus? Park 192. Substance free. It’s a lifestyle choice.
Do you want to move back to New York City eventually? Definitely. I’ve always had that empire state of mind.
Is this how you pictured college? I didn’t really picture college. What sold me on WashU was Mudd Field. I always pictured college having a giant field and when I came here I walked through the DUC and I saw kids frizzing on Mudd and I thought “this is college.”
Where is your favorite place to eat on campus? The South 40 smokehouse. I’m a big fan of the extra meat. I always get the ribs or the brisket. Anything meat I get it and extra.
Favorite place to eat in St. Louis? Roper’s, Pappy’s, or Wong’s Wok.
Tell me about “Upper West.” I would describe it as hip pop. It started with me and my friend this past April just kind of playing around – we made four songs and put them on the internet and got really good feedback. So we just kept doing it and it just kept growing. I think our fan base is a lot of 8-year old girls, young Jews, and pretty much the weirdos across America.
When did you get involved in music? I literally just started anything musical a couple months ago, back in April, but I have always been one with words.
Where do you want Upper West to go? We’re just two young kids on the way to make a millie. We’ve performed across the Northeast and in New York; we’ll be in St. Louis on November 18; we’re going out to Pennsylvania.
Favorite part of freshmen year so far? Probably the air fresh air. The tobacco-free campus.
Tell me about the Gleicher Thanksgiving tradition. We go to Grandpa Eddy’s house in Florida and eat a lot of store bought food that is claimed to be homemade. We play football against my younger cousins and kill them every time obviously. We look at all the amazing new things that my grandpa has found. Greg snores so there are a lot of sleepless nights. I write a lot of haikus during Thanksgiving.
Describe October in one word. Rustic.
What are you doing this weekend? I’m going to Pennsylvania to see my friend from home.
