6 Classic Movies You Need to Watch this Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

Grab some hot apple cider and settle in for an autumnal movie marathon with these recommendations.

When Harry Met Sally

Starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, When Harry Met Sally explores the age-old question of whether men and women can just be friends. Complete with witty banter and long walks under the leaves in Central Park, this movie is a must see.

‘It’s the great pumpkin, Charlie Brown’

This animated special follows the peanuts gang as they prepare for Halloween. An autumn tradition, no fall would be complete without Linus falling asleep in the pumpkin patch.

Dead Poet’s Society

I think we can all I agree when I say that nothing says fall quite so much as going back to school. In this movie, Robin Williams plays Professor Keating, an eccentric teacher at Weldon Academy, who inspires his students through poetry.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Based of the children’s book by Roald Dahl, this movie tells the tale of Mr. Fox and his misadventures with three farmers in his neighbourhood. Voiced by celebrities such as George Clooney and Meryl Streep, this movie is full of witty banter and lots of Wes Anderson’s quirky aesthetic to put you in the autumn mood.

You’ve Got Mail

The quintessential romantic comedy, You’ve Got Mail tells the story of bookstore rivals Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) and Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) who accidentally fall in love over the internet, all under the beautiful backdrop of New York in Fall. “Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.”

Garden State

Director Zach Braff stars in this quirky romantic comedy as Andrew, a small-time actor who returns home to New Jersey for his mother’s funeral and falls in love with a girl he meets at the doctor’s office. Set in New Jersey in the fall, this movie boasts excellent performances from Braff and Natalie Portman, and one of the best autumnal movie soundtracks ever made.
