I’ve been in a musical mood lately, maybe you’ve seen me walking around campus with my headphones on, oblivious to the world around me. The following is a bit of a mash-up of old and new music as well as different genres, so take your pick according to your own taste. But honestly, I’d check them all out if I were you, it never hurts to try out some new stuff that you wouldn’t usually listen to. Except for country. Never feel pressured to listen to country music.
- Staring At The Sun – Post Malone
-
Okay, so I never thought I was a Post Malone fan, but I’m obsessed with his new album, Hollywood’s Bleeding. It’s a little moody, a little sassy, a little bit of everything. This song is my personal favourite, it’s got a cool analogy and SZA and Post Malone make for a good duet.
- Rooting For You – Alessia Cara
-
Only heard this one recently, but it’s a bop. It’s got a nice beat and some cool sound effects going on in the background throughout the song. Summer doesn’t have to end if you just keep listening to this song as you walk through the fallen leaves.
- Hero – Family of the Year
-
Ah yes, the song I like to belt out at top volume when all my roommates are out of the house. I get to pretend that I’m going through this huge ordeal when in reality, my biggest conflict of the day was figuring out what to make for lunch.
- Donna – The Lumineers
-
The Lumineers’ latest album “III” is also one worth checking out as a whole, not just this song. But one of my roommates has been singing this one a lot, and so it’s stuck in my head. Check out their music videos for this album too!
- I Say A Little Prayer – Aretha Franklin
-
I watched “My Best Friend’s Wedding” a couple of weeks ago and have been listening to this one ever since. It’s actually my alarm on my phone now, a solid upgrade from my previous “Marimba” sound. I know I’ll eventually grow to hate the sound of it, but it’s nice for now.
- Where’s My Love – SYML
-
Found this one on a folk playlist and it’s really soft and sad. Good to stare out the window of the bus and lament my middle school crush while listening to this one.
- Alive – Khalid
-
Another soft boi, Khalid never fails to calm me down and he’s got great lyrics. Yes, his voice is distractingly sexy, but if you actually listen to what he’s saying, you’ll be a better person for it.
- Holocene – Bon Iver
-
I went to my first official concert ever last week, Bon Iver at the Scotiabank Arena. This was the song where everyone switched on their phone flashlights and the whole place lit up in cheesy but lovable concert fashion. It has a special place in my heart for the memories from that night.
I never know what to tell people when they ask me what kind of music I listen to, so in the future, I’ll be telling them to refer to this article. Hope you check out some of these songs, along with their respective artists and albums, and I also hope that you got to know me a bit better :)
