How to Celebrate Valentine’s Day If You’re Single

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

If you’re reading this right now, chances are you are probably single. With couples going on cute and romantic dates and giving each other adorable little gifts, Valentine’s Day (AKA single’s awareness day) can be a real drag if you’re ridin’ solo. But fear no more!! It is possible to celebrate Valentine’s Day if you’re single! Here are some ideas:

1. Pamper yourself

Since Valentine’s Day is during reading week this year, what better way to de-stress and unwind from a hectic first half of the semester? Relax by getting a soothing facial or maybe a calming massage to loosen up those tense muscles. If that’s not your thing, try getting a flawless manicure or a fantabulous pedicure!

2. Treat Yourself

It’s ok to indulge once in a while and what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with your favourite food? Maybe try some Valentine’s Day classics such as chocolate, candy hearts, cupcakes or steak. Or better yet, celebrate on the fifteenth by buying all the chocolate that goes on sale that day – boo ya

3. Spend it with people who matter

Being single during V-Day means that you can spend it with the people who really matter to you. In other words, you have more time to spend with friends, family and maybe your cat. It’s the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with them you otherwise wouldn’t get while at school! Awe, so caute.

4. Splurge on yourself

If you’ve been eyeing that My Princess ring from Pandora or you’ve been saving up for some Root’s sweats, Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to splurge on something nice for yourself! You definitely deserve it after a long first half of the term and when you come back to school after reading week, you’ll be able to show it off.

5. Go to the movies

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, the long awaited movie adaptation for the novel Fifty Shades of Grey is coming out on Valentine’s Day (ahhhh!). If you’ve been dying to see it, V-Day is the perfect opportunity to go watch it.  According to Waterford Whisper News, “many boyfriends have admitted that they consider having to sit through 50 Shades of Grey to be the ultimate in BDSM torture.” If Fifty Shades of Grey isn’t your thing and you loved Into the Woods, Anna Kendrick will be starring in a romantic musical called The Last Five Years.

6. Stay at home and watch Netflix all day

Let’s face it: your true love is probably Netflix. Since Valentine’s Day is all about spending it with people and things you love, why not spend it watching Netflix while wearing a onesie and eating pizza?! And if you don’t have any plans or you don’t want to go out in public on the fourteenth, Netflix will always be there for you (thank goodness). Maybe start a TV series you’ll probably end up binge watching; Friends, Gossip Girl or Grey’s Anatomy to name a few.

7. Celebrate yourself

It’s been a long first half of the semester and not everyday do people take the time to appreciate themselves. Whether you love to dance, write or go for a long walk, spend Valentine’s Day celebrating you and do something you love to do because you deserve it!
