UW is a large campus, so there are a bunch of popular study spots. Below we’ve listed some of the pros and cons associated with these desired locations:
Davis Centre:
PROS: The Davis Centre is one of the largest libraries around campus, making it an ideal study spot. DC is my second home during exam season. It has a variety of study spots including; silent study, quiet study and ‘group study’ in downstairs DC for those that need to do review with a group of people. Plus, there are a number of study rooms with whiteboards that you can book out! The service and IT desks are available in case you run into technological issues and if you forget your phone charger they can always hook you up.  In addition, multiple bus routes are conveniently located right outside of DC perfect after a late night study session.   Studying can be very draining and refuelling is essential. DC has two Tim Horton’s in the building and the DC cafe is usually open as well.  DC express Tim Horton’s is also open extended hours during exam time.
CONS:Â There is not much natural light if you are studying downstairs and the DC bathrooms always tend to have a stench. Even though DC has many seats, once they are taken its almost impossible to find an empty seat. So in order to find a seat, get there early, timing is key.
Quantum-Nano Centre
PROS: QNC also known as the honey-comb-building is one of the prettiest building on Campus. The wall sized windows provide loads of natural sun light and a very nice view of the pathway outside. The tables are huge and there are plenty of outlets on each table for your electronics. The white boards are great for reviewing your notes or drawing on during study breaks. There are also study tables on the main floor, upper floor, and downstairs. The floor downstairs also has a piano, in case you need play your stress away.
CONS: If you are someone who gets distracted easily, studying on the main floor and upper floor may not be the best idea as people are constantly walking by. Also the piano playing may divert your attention away from your studying. The doors to QNC get locked at 9pm so if you are studying on the main floor you may have to continuously get up and open it.
Student Life Centre
PROS: As the name says it, SLC is the life of the campus. There are a variety of food options to choose from, whether it be Tim Horton’s, Subway and the 24/7 International store. SLC is always hustling and bustling and you are bound to run into someone you know and have a quick chat. The Turn Key desk is also there to help wherever they can and offers board games if you want to take a break and de-stress.
CONS: There are limited outlets and seats (with tables) in SLC, and it is definitely not quiet or silent by any means unless you are studying on the third floor. Â
Dana Porter
PROS: DP the other library on campus is also an ideal study location. The 10 floors and various study spots on each floor, offer an abundance of cubicles and group study desks. It has extended hours during exam periods, making it a great late-night study spot. Similar to DC the circulation desk provides loads of support. The cafe on the first floor offers coffee, pastries, and other yummy snacks. The best part of studying in DP is the great view of campus and Waterloo you get to see.
CONS: Other than the cafe there are no nearby food places. DP can also be quite claustrophobic at times, as most floors are packed with row and rows of books. So if you are someone who likes to study in an open space DP may not be the place for you.
There are many more study spots around campus each with their pros and con, the key is find what works for you! We suggest checking out STC or the new SJU Extension if you want to try studying somewhere new.Â
Happy Exam Season!
