“DO REVENGE”: The Gen Z Movie We’ve Been Waiting For?

The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at West Chester chapter.

We all grew up watching 2000s movies like Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, A Cinderella Story, and Jennifer’s Body. We all grew up watching 2000s movies like Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, A Cinderella Story, and Jennifer’s Body. What do all these movies have in common? A killer soundtrack, an amazing cast, an exciting plot line, and of course, the makeover scene present in every 2000s movie. Netflix’s DO REVENGE has all of this and more. It’s a very 2000s movie combined with a Gen Z twist. Netflix even takes inspiration from fan favorites like Clueless and 10 Things I Hate About You, especially in regard to fashion and hair choices.

DO REVENGE is about popular girl Drea getting her sex tape leaked by her golden boy, boyfriend, Max. She teams up with Eleanor who was wronged by a girl from day camp that started a nasty rumor about her. Together they decide to take down the people that hurt them… and do each other’s revenge. This movie contains elements that would entertain any generation but especially Gen Z. I mean, what kind of Gen-Zer doesn’t enjoy a healthy dose of 2000s references mixed with humor specific to us?

This movie gave us a revamped version of the paintball scene from 10 Things I Hate About You while also giving us the iconic scene of Regina George standing amidst chaos in Mean Girls. Not to mention the number of one-liners that were definitely written with Gen-Z in mind. This includes lines like, “I’m the sl*t on probation and he and his tiny d*ck get off scot-free,” or “I just want to eat my lunch on their shattered egos.” There are too many iconic quotes from this movie to even fit into one article.

The plot of this movie is everything we’ve been hoping for and more. It’s basically like if you mixed Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train with psychotic teenage girls. Drea and Eleanor team up and pull some really crazy tricks, one of which starts with spiking their entire class with mushrooms and ends with everyone as high as a kite. I don’t want to give too much away but the plot twist in this movie was something I never saw coming. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen.

DO REVENGE depicts the tumultuous aspects of being a girl in high school when it comes to friendships and relationships. We watch as Drea comes to terms with the fact that her so-called friends chose to believe her boyfriend over her. As the movie continues we watch her friendship with Eleanor grow and she begins to see what a real friendship should look like.

This movie is everything we grew up loving about 2000s movies, but with a modern twist. I definitely recommend giving it a watch!
