Campus Celebrity: Bradley Metlin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Western chapter.

Age: 21

What program are you in at Western? Canadian-American Relations

Hometown: Mississuaga, Ontario

Relationship Status: Single

Tell me about yourself: (Ie, what you enjoy doing, hobbies, activities you do at school)

I’m someone who feeds off the energy of others and loves meeting new people. I’m always up for a good conversation; whether it’s politics, the latest Netflix show, or what’s happening in a friend’s life.

Who is your role model?

It’s probably cliché but I’m going to say my mom. She always taught me that if there was something wrong in life, to question it and speak up. It wasn’t just something she said either; she was always taking an active role in our lives and speaking her mind. My mom’s attitude has influenced me profoundly and I wouldn’t be who I was without her.

What is your favourite song right now?

“When We Were Young” by Adele. Everyone is currently drunk on her new album right now but this song is absolutely beautiful. I’m also a sucker for things that make me feel nostalgic and that’s exactly how this song makes me feel.

Do you have any mottos that you live by?

“You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything” is the title of a book by Star Jones and it’s pure wisdom. I’m pretty sure Malcolm X first said it but I find it funny to attribute it to Star Jones. Anyway, this quote is pure genius. If you don’t act with conviction, you’re going to quickly be unable to act. Period.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I love how this question is posed, as if I’m not already grown. I honestly have no idea. Part of me would love to be a lawyer because I love researching and then formulating an argument. Public relations and fixing other people’s problems has always interested me. Being Premier or Prime Minister is also something I imagine would be fun — I think big.

Do you enjoy working at the Gazette? What do you do there?

I’m the Opinions Editor and I love it because I’m playing a role in sparking discussions on campus about important issues. I also strive to ensure people are talking about things rather than glossing over them.

What’s your favourite part about being an upper year in residence?

Watching first year students grow from where they are in September to April. I know I personally matured a lot during my first year at Western so seeing that trajectory and playing a part in it is amazing.

How do you balance your jobs and school?

Honestly, I’ve always been someone who has to be busy in order to succeed. The busier the better, to be honest.

Have you had any classes/ professors at Western that made an impact on you?

I’m currently in my third full year course with history professor Aldona Sendzikas who is one of the most professional and helpful people on this campus. Her dry sense of humor and ability to make what we’re learning about interesting makes her awesome. Also, political science professor Dan Bousfield is, by far, the most accommodating person I’ve ever met who genuinely cares about student success.

Do have any guilty pleasures?

I love eating the most unhealthy food. Like McDonald’s. Oh my goodness.

What’s your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

Honestly, hanging out with my friends gives me so much energy and is the most enjoyable thing I can do. I also love watching movies. Or writing.

What superpower would you have if you could pick any super power?

I always thought flying would be the coolest thing — teleportation seemed like such a lazy route — but then someone pointed out that the wind would be super cold when you’re flying. Imagine running into birds and stuff!? Maybe teleportation would be better then? Really, I just want the ability to get places very quickly.
