With Valentine’s Day coming up, I’m here to provide you with a little bit of the most important kind of love there is…. Self love.
This time of year it’s especially easy to get down on yourself. It’s cold, the days are short, and you may have finally succumbed to the depressing slump caused by winter.
When I’m feeling badly, the first thing I attack about myself is my looks. Why? I’m not entirely sure. My best guess would be because it is just so easy to do so. Thinner, prettier, nicer hair, longer nails; the list goes on and on for things that I wish I could change about myself. When you’re depressed it becomes even easier to focus in on these flaws and make it seem like your looks are the only thing that matter about yourself.
It’s hard, but I’m trying to break this train of thought. There is so much more to me than how I look, and I need to remember this when thinking and talking about myself. The most valued compliments I’ve received from friends, and even the odd stranger, have nothing to do with looks. So, in an attempt to create a little self love, I’ve created a list of adjectives I’d rather be associated with than ‘sexy.’ Take a read and think about how you relate to the words. Who cares about how you look when there’s so many other positive traits out there.
Â
1. Funny. I love being told that someone appreciates my sense of humour. It shows that not only are they carefully listening to what you say and what you relate to, but that they agree with you.Â
2. Stylish. I put a lot of time (Winners racks aren’t going to just search themselves) and effort into my wardrobe and I love being complimented on it.Â
3. Smart. My favourite people are those friends that you can have serious conversations with about world issues. Whether it’s about how you should read “Five Languages of Love” or feminist theory, it’s great to talk about something real. I’m always flattered as hell when someone not only wants to hear my opinion, but tells me that I am well spoken or well read.Â
4. Caring. I’m a sensitive person and it’s nice to be told that people notice the effort that you are putting in, and that they appreciate it.Â
5. Fun. If anyone ever wants to go drunk bowling or play laser tag, I’m your girl.Â
6. Opinionated. Anyone can agree with you, it’s much better when someone tells you what they honestly think and let you come to your own conclusions.

The next time I’m having a day where I feel gross and unattractive, I’m going to think of all the positive, more important, traits that I have going for myself other than just looks. I encourage everyone to do the same. This Valentine’s Day, love yourself.
