Lorde Takes Toronto Stage For “Melodrama” Tour

It was a night of green lights and stunning vocals this past Thursday at the Air Canada Centre, where New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde took the Toronto crowd on a journey of art, emotion, and of course, a slight amount of melodrama.

Lorde performed a mix of her 2017 release, Melodrama, and her 2013 album, Pure Heroine. Thousands of ecstatic fans welcomed her to the stage for the first time in nearly five years, when she last performed for a small crowd at the Danforth Music Hall.

Lorde has come a long way since playing for the small crowds, however, and is currently two-thirds of the way through her world tour.

The entire night had a feeling of unapologetic authenticity. The young singer mentioned halfway through that it had taken her a long time to stop trying to seem “cool,” before realizing that it was okay to show up exactly the way she is. Following this, she told the crowd to be exactly who they are, in whatever way that is. “Be the over-reactor,” she called to an enthusiastic reply. “Be the writer. Be the hopeless romantic, if that’s who you are.”

Calling the night in Toronto one of her favourite nights of the tour so far, she paid tribute to the city halfway through the show by covering Toronto-born singer Drake’s “Shot For Me.”

With a simplistic sound and look to the entire show, Lorde managed to captivate the audience with sheer words and music alone. Inspiring her fans with her ever-present poetic creativity, Lorde managed to make the night one in which every person could feel like their very own green light was within their grasp.
