This week’s campus celebrity is the very passionate and involved Maha Hassan. She is a fourth year student at Western University, pursuing a degree in Health Science. She is a very active member of the faculty, as she has a prominent role on the Faculty of Health Sciences Student Council (FHSSC). She is the VP of Student Affairs for the council, and along with that, she is involved in several other impressive extra-curricular activities on and off campus.
As the VP of Student Affairs for FHSSC, Maha and her subcommittee contribute by providing programming for students, especially those within the faculty of health science. This year herself along with her team, big names including Nicola Paviglianiti, Pallavi Singh and Skyler Mann managed to start three incredible initiatives. These came from three new streams created within the student affairs portfolio: community outreach coordinator, academics commissioner, and wiki commissioner.
A big project in the community outreach sector this year is ‘Service Saturdays’. This programming gives Western students the opportunity to go and volunteer within the community with other peers. One example of this is intergenerational learning at The Windermere on the Mount senior’s home. In terms of academics, the student affairs group managed to partner with another student group on campus and put fourth Western’s first ever multidisciplinary undergraduate research conference. Finally, the wiki portfolio partnered up with both the Science Students’ Council and the Social Science Students’ Council to start a student-to-student platform where they can provide feedback on courses, gain access to internships relevant to their program, and learn of volunteer opportunities. It is safe to say that Maha has played a tremendous role on council this year, and has showcased her ability to help other students get involved.
