The man behind Kapre.
Age: 22
Program: Criminology and Sociology at King’s University
Year: 5th
Hometown: London, ON
So why music? What made you decide to become a DJ?
“No one has really asked me this question actually… I haven’t really decided. Can we come back to this?”
*15 minutes later*
“I don’t know, I just really enjoyed listening to music and then I started watching videos on YouTube and one thing led to another.”
How do you feel about the ‘DJ’ stereotype?
“It is 100% accurate. Everybody is a DJ. Yes, all we do need is a USB. No one really does live mixing anymore, that’s why everyone’s a DJ, you just have to put music together. I do a lot more producing as opposed to DJ-ing.”
Do you have any upcoming shows we can attend?
“Not in London, unfortunately. But hopefully I’ll be doing something in the US this summer!”
You recently changed your name from Boomslang to Kapre. Why?
“I just needed a fresh start, I needed to brand myself according to my music, not the name I picked when I was 16.”
What does Kapre mean to you and how do you feel it represents you as an artist?
“When I was doing research and came across it, I felt like its characteristics and personality reflected me as a person because it likes to joke around and have fun. Kapre is also very passionate about the people it loves.”
Do you plan on continuing with music? Or continue with your education?
“Education is definitely a first. I’ve always wanted to go into law enforcement but music is a passion of mine and I’d like to see where it goes. School comes first!!”
You’re DJ-ing and the crowd starts chanting DANCE DANCE DANCE! What dance move do you do?
“Oh God. My usual go to is when you spin on the ground, like on your butt. But people wouldn’t be able to see me. OH, definitely the Leo.”
Example:
What do you do in your spare time?
“Make music, video games, do charity work, hang out with friends. I love Netflix.”
What are you most proud of so far?
“Musically, it would have to be a couple upcoming releases I have coming out with Sony as well as other major labels I have dreamed of working with. Personally, probably my involvement at King’s and all my co-curricular programs.”
Any other skills you want to learn?
“I want to learn how to play a real instrument.”
