Meet Erica Camilleri

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Western chapter.

Tell me a little bit about yourself and what you do at Western:

I am currently in second year BMOS, specializing in Accounting, and hoping to get accepted into Ivey for next year. In terms of extra curricular activities, I am involved in the Western USC Income Tax Clinic.

How did you hear about the Western USC Income Tax Clinic? Why did you decide to join?

In first year, I got an email from a BMOS program lead and they were advertising for general volunteers. At the time, I was looking to get involved in something business related, and this was something a little different from the typical business club. In second year, I applied to be an executive member because I really enjoyed the club and thought my leadership skills would be beneficial to the organization. I was also not really involved in any other on-campus organizations and knew I would be able to devote my time to an organization that is for a good cause.

What is your position on the Western USC Income Tax Clinic?

Currently, I am a pretty active executive member on the club, and one of the volunteer directors, so I am in charge of the recruitment and organization of our student tax analysts. This year we are expecting 300 applications and selecting approximately 80 applicants.

What exactly is the income tax clinic and what do you do?

The Western Income Tax Clinic is an organization that selects a group of student tax analysts who are given training through the Canada Revenue Agency, as well as taxation professors at Western. We look for students of all academic backgrounds, and train them to prepare tax returns. Then in March, we have a one-week clinic in the Mustang Lounge where Western students can get their tax returns completed for free. London locals who are qualified can as well!

What would you tell your first year self?

I would tell myself to get involved, branch out, and party more in residence. And to not worry about what others think of you.

What is your favourite thing to do in your spare time?

I love to cook!

What is your goal for this year?

I want to make the Dean’s Honour List and go to the rec centre more often.

Currently a fourth year philosophy student at Western University and Junior Events Executive for Her Campus.
