Thinking of Living Alone? Here’s Why You Should

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Western chapter.

Roommates are not for everyone; sometimes it’s better to just live alone. Many people are discouraged by this idea, and more often than not, it is because they are afraid. That was me three years ago. Living alone sounds dreadful and lonely, and there is no doubt that it can be at times, but if I could go back in time and do things differently, I wouldn’t change a thing. I didn’t have good experiences with roommates and even knowing this I still was convinced I wanted to live with others. Three years ago, I would have never agreed to living alone, but boy am I happy I do now.

If you are considering living alone, here are some reasons why you should.

1. Finding your Independence

The great thing about living alone is learning how to not be so dependent on others. If you are someone who always turns to others to help you make decisions, or someone who doesn’t know how to wash their own laundry, then living alone will help you go from child to adult real quick. No one will be there to hold your hand thus forcing you to step up to the plate and get sh*t done. After being on your own for so long, you will become one boss ass independent girl or guy that can tackle anything that comes your way.

2. Learning To Enjoy Your Own Company

This is one of the most crucial steps to learning self-love. If you can begin to feel comfortable and content with eating alone, shopping alone and doing chores alone, you are one step closer to achieving happiness within yourself. It is so essential to learn to enjoy your own company and love yourself before trying to build relationships with others. It isn’t something that is readily learned and it may take time, but living alone will help you get there faster.

3. You Can Do Whatever The Hell You Want

Like walking around naked? Like listening to music on full blast at odd hours of the day? Then living alone is right for you. Think of all the possibilities— it is your place now. You can lie around all day with leftover peanut butter on your chin while binge watching Netflix, and no one will be there to judge you, or you can have “special” company over and not have to check with your roommates first. The possibilities are literally endless.

4. You Can be as Messy/Clean as You Want

Ever had a really messy roommate, or maybe you were the messy roommate? Either way do not fret, because if you live alone you can live as you please. Whether you prefer a pig stye or you are a type A fanatic when it comes to cleaning, when you live alone you can choose to be whoever you’d like to be. No one will mess up your place or yell at you to clean up after yourself.

Living alone is not for everyone. It can no doubt be lonely at times, but if you can get past all that, you can begin to enjoy the benefits. Regardless, everyone should learn to be by themselves for a bit because it truly makes you a better person.

My name is Giulia, it's pronounced just like Julia only its spelt with a G! Anyone who knows me well knows I love my cat and my apartment will always be stocked with wine. I like to think of myself as a self-proclaimed makeup artist considering I spend hours on end studying from the makeup school of Youtube. I'm also a strong believer that animals are our friends, not food!
