A world without arts will cease to exist…

Well, it won’t, but we won’t be in it. We would have gone extinct a long time ago along with our Neanderthalian relatives were it not for the arts and artists.

Then why do most people not take the arts as seriously as science or economics or engineering? Why do we regularly see memes and jokes about the arts being the easiest of streams when it is one of the most difficult subjects to conquer if conquering it is even possible? There are infinite possibilities for an idea to develop within just the four walls of your room.

Mathematics gets complicated as the abstractness within it increases. If someone understands even 5% of it, people consider them to be smart. The true essence of abstractness is a prominent feature of the arts and yet if someone even thinks of venturing into this area, they are mocked, quieted down, or simply ignored. Arts as a stream is not offered the support, motivation or attention that other majors receive.

If you are still not sure if arts are important, answer these questions:

  1. When was the last time you calculated the mass of a molecule, assuming you are not in science?

  2. When was the last time you put on clothes regardless of your profession?

  3. When was the last time you solved the equation for the terminal velocity because you had to launch your rocket into space that day?

  4. When was the last time your mouth watered remembering a dish from that one restaurant you really like?

  5. When was the last time you watched an episode of the show you like or a movie that you love?

  6. When was the last time you heard a song?

  7. When was it that you saw a photograph that just mesmerized you or saw such a beautifully decorated house that you wished that you could live there?

  8. When was the last time you talked?

There is art in everything that we do. Isn’t it time we start appreciating people who work hard so that the world can survive—so that we can survive and enjoy life while surviving? It is time that the arts and artists get the recognition that is long overdue, which they so rightly deserve.

*My intention with this article and the articles that follow are not to downgrade any stream of education, but they are to bring the arts to the same level of importance as other streams are considered to be on.
