‘Tis the season, folks! It’s December, which means the year is coming to an end, and the bests and the worsts of 2016 are upon us. In the spirit of DJ Earworm releasing his annual United State of Pop mash-up, and the Grammy nominations, I’ve compiled a list of songs. I don’t want to say that they’re the worst songs of 2016, but in my opinion, they definitely shouldn’t follow us into 2017.
1. “Closer (feat. Halsey)” – The Chainsmokers
Hey Chainsmokers, I was doing just fine before I met you too.
2. Any song by Meghan Trainor
My name is NO, my attitude towards her is NO, so please just…NO.
3. “One Dance (feat. Wizkid & Kyla)” – Drake
Fun fact: only men over the age of 70 knew what Hennessy was before Drake started rapping about it.
4. “Work From Home (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)” – Fifth Harmony
I refuse to support the over-sexualization of these teenage girls.
5. “24K Magic” – Bruno Mars
Bruno, you aren’t fooling anyone by bringing back “Uptown Funk” (which should have stayed in 2015) and changing the words.
6. “H.O.L.Y” – Florida Georgia Line
TBH, this song gives country music a bad name.
7. “Don’t Mind” – Kent Jones
Only because kids today will never understand what it means to “crank that”.
8. Any song by DNCE
How many more comebacks will Joe Jonas try to make if we don’t stop him now?
9. “Just Like Fire” – P!nk
She should’ve stayed in 2006, if I’m being honest.
10. “7 Years” – Lukas Graham
It’s just not a song you’d find in my music library.
11. “Die a Happy Man” – Nelly
I think whoever let Nelly remix a country song (again) needs to be fired.
12. “Middle (feat. Bipolar Sunshine)” – DJ Snake
The radio ruined this song.
13. “Pillowtalk” – Zayn
I’m honestly just bitter that he left One Direction.
14. “Get Ugly” – Jason Derulo
I honestly don’t have an explanation. Just listen to the song and you’ll understand why it should stay in 2016.
15. “Stressed Out” – Twenty One Pilots
This is another song that the radio ruined.
16. “Different For Girls (feat. Elle King)” – Dierks Bentley
I feel like this song is trying so hard not to be sexist, that it’s coming across as extremely sexist.
Here’s to hoping that better music comes out in 2017, and we can stop hearing these same few songs multiple times a day!
