If you haven’t read Fourth Wing yet and you’re planning to read it, then you shouldn’t read this article as it contains major spoilers about the book. With that being said, I’m only going to summarize some major plot points and things that happen at the end of Fourth Wing, before jumping into my thoughts and theories about the rest of the series.

Some Major Plot Points of Fourth Wing

Violet Sorrengail bonds with two dragons, Tairn and Andarna. Tairn’s mate is Sgaeyl who happens to be bonded to Xaden Riorson. This creates a powerful bond between Xaden and Violet, such that if one of them dies, the other one will too. Violet gets her signet power, which is the power to wield lightning, while Xaden’s is the power to control shadows. Violet and Xaden admit their feelings for one another (eventually) and become a couple.

Xaden, Violet and a team of a few others are sent on a mission to protect an outpost. When they get there, they learn that a small village near the outpost is being attacked by Venin and they’re not expected to make it out alive. The team and Violet end up defeating the Venin, but she is seriously injured, so Xaden ends up taking them somewhere to heal. This is where Violet learns about the new rebellion and that her brother, Brennan, is alive and that he’s the one who mended her injuries.

Now that we’ve covered a bit of the major Fourth Wing plot points, here are my thoughts and theories about what may happen in Iron Flame or even in the rest of the series.

One of the Sorrengail Siblings Will Die.

Now that both of Violet’s siblings are known to be alive, I feel like it’s inevitable that one of them is going to end up dying. Both Mira and Brennan surviving until the end of the series seems very unlikely, especially with Mira being out in the field and Brennan being on the side of the rebellion. Personally, I think it would be dramatic if Brennan was the one to die, considering we just found out he was alive, so I think it’s more realistic for the story if Mira dies. Violet has a closer bond with Mira than with Brennan anyways, because he’s been ‘dead’ for six years, so Mira dying has the potential to either destroy Violet or fuel her vengeance.

Are Xaden and Violet Endgame?

I would like Xaden and Violet to be endgame, but it’s a five-book series and they’re already dating after book one, so that’s a little concerning. But, as mentioned, they’re connected to each other through their dragons in a powerful way that if Xaden dies, it has the potential to kill Violet and vice versa. With this being said, there has to be some major conflict between Violet and Xaden coming because we’re still only at the beginning of the series. Also, though we know that Violet and Xaden are only connected because Tairn and Sgaeyl are mates, Violet has another dragon. So, if Andarna finds a mate, that would mean that Violet would be connected to whoever is the rider of Andarna’s mate, giving us the potential for a love triangle. Personally, I would love to see this. I just feel like this would add the perfect amount of angst to the romance.

General Sorrengail: Good or Bad?

I like the theory that Violet’s mother, General Lilith Sorrengail, is evil. The first piece of evidence to suggest this is that Lilith’s signet is the power to wield storms and control the weather. When it was Violet’s turn to cross the parapet, it began violently storming, which conveniently stopped as soon as she made it across. This also happened right after Lilith forced Violet to join the Rider’s Quadrant, even though she’d been preparing her whole life to join the Scribe Quadrant. Secondly, Lilith also knows that Venin exists because of the dagger on her desk but she has done nothing to stop them. This suggests that Lilith might have killed her husband because he knew too much about the venin and everything else going on.

Will Dain Get a Redemption Arc?

I didn’t like Dain from the beginning when he tried to get Violet to leave the Rider’s Quadrant after she’d already told him that she wanted to stay. Then, after the Threshing, he proved to Violet that he would rather let her die than break the rules. So, the fact that he was reading her mind and memories the whole time shouldn’t have been surprising to Violet, but it was unfortunate. Then he goes and completely betrays her by sending her off to her death. I mean he literally said goodbye to her, thinking that he was never going to see her again. After all this, I hope that Violet doesn’t forgive Dain because his actions led to so much pain. If she does end up forgiving him, I will honestly be so disappointed.

These are just a couple of thoughts that I have about this series. I’ve been counting down the days until I finally have enough time to read Iron Flame. Now, I can’t wait to see what happens and to find out if any of my theories have the potential to come true.
