Ringing in the New Year in Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

As cliché as it sounds, there is no better time than the new year to re-evaluate the person we’ve been and to set new goals for the person we want to be. It signifies a time to mend any loose ends that were left hanging and set new goals to help us strive to be the best version of ourselves that we can be.

This “out with the old, in with the new” philosophy is no different when it comes to our wardrobe, collegiettes. January means putting to rest last year’s trends, investing in fresh staple pieces, and parting with the expired makeup lingering in the backs of our drawers. The new year doesn’t necessarily create an excuse to splurge on everything in our sight, but it is definitely a fair excuse to invest in pieces we’ve been wanting all year and to set goals to create a new style for 2016. Her Campus has created a list of fashion resolutions every collegiette should take advantage of in 2016.

1. Accessorize more often.

Jewelry is the hidden gem of our wardrobes that immediately uplifts any outfit. It’s so simple to add a watch, necklace, earrings, or rings! Never underestimate the power of small details.

2. Make the change you’ve always been considering.

Whether it’s a new hairstyle, wearing a statement outfit piece, or tested winged eyeliner, give it a shot.

3. Make purchase decisions based on quality over quantity.

Investing in clothing pieces that will last years or purchasing chemical-free, high quality makeup is always worth the splurge with a guilt-free conscience.

4. Ditch chemicals, animal-testing, and companies supporting child labour.

It’s 2016 collegiettes; individual contribution CAN make a change towards a cruelty-free culture.

5. Toss the makeup in your drawers that you haven’t used in months or have replaced with a new product.

It’s most likely passed its lifespan and harboring bacteria that can lead to skin irritation or infection.

6. Wash off your make-up and take your contacts out every night.

This is a classic bad habit every collegiette is guilty of on occasion, especially after a long night out. Do your skin and eyes a favour and take up this resolution.

7. Take risks.

Wear that faux-fur vest sitting in the back of your closet, or the backless dress you bought on a whim. Be fearless in your outfit decisions this year.

Happy 2016 collegiettes! Her Campus wishes you the most fabulous 2016 filled with opportunities to revamp your life using these fashion and beauty resolutions.
