Seven Signs You’re Doing Better Than You Think

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

As a student, life can become tremendously stressful. We all have days, weeks — even months — where we feel unsure and fearful of what lies ahead for us. Whether that be where we see ourselves in five years or where we see ourselves tomorrow, it is easy to get caught up in the stresses of everyday life. Hence, I think it is important to recognize the small victories we make each day, rather than burdening ourselves with the worries of what comes next. It is often easier to take things for granted than it is to focus on each of our “little” accomplishments. Thus, I have come up with a series of reminders that will help you recognize that you are doing just fine.

1. You have a job

Whether it is minimum wage or a high paying position, you are earning money that likely helps you pay for the essentials (or the non-essentials). Not only are you making some extra bucks, you are also developing experience that will likely benefit you in the long run. You are taking initiative and responsibility for yourself. That deserves a pat on the back. Go you!

2. You are in school

Between the abundance of assigned readings, lengthy research papers and final exams, it can often feel as if university is a full-time job in itself. Regardless of your standing GPA, recognizing the hard work that comes with being in school is a prime example of a daily victory. You should be proud of yourself for simply making the routine effort towards achieving your academic goals.
3. You are not the same person you were this time last year

Not only have you grown a year in age, but you have grown as a person since this time last year. You have learnt, matured and changed in a variety of ways. You can identify that you have grown and recognize the developments you have made along the way. Changing is normal — and it is most definitely an indicator that you are on the right path.

4. You’ve lost friendships/relationships

Although falling out with friends and dealing with breakups are challenging situations, they are also ordinary parts of growing up. People often get caught up in the emotional side of these losses and neglect the idea that you are simply making room in your life for individuals that are right for you. All of which will bring you acceptance, joy and happiness. It is important to recognize that this is a normal experience and that you will absolutely come out on the other side.

5. You have goals

Whether it be striving for your dream career — or to simply pass this year of school, you are working towards a goal. Even if you encounter some minor setbacks in the process, you have a dream in mind and you are doing your best to attain it.

6. You made your bed this morning

This may seem like a ridiculous addition to the list, however, it is a task that is often overlooked (especially when you’re running out the door in the morning). Whether you made your bed today, did a load of laundry or simply tidied your bedroom, you should be satisfied with your accomplishment. Small tasks like this are a step in the right direction and should make you feel gratified, even if it is the only productive work you tackled today. You did it!

7. You have made it through some tough situations

By looking back on the challenges you have faced in the past, you are recognizing that one, you got through those difficult times — and two, you will most definitely get through the hardships you face today. You are tough, determined and strong. Rather than let the past hold you back, you are aware that you will make it through the hurdles of life each and every time!

In everyday life it is easy to get caught up in the challenges and often forget to recognize all the good that we are doing too. It is important to remember that just because not every day goes the way we want it to, you are indeed doing much better than you think you are!

Wilfrid Laurier '20

Currently studying General Arts at Laurier. I have always enjoyed writing as a past time and think it is the best way for anyone to express their inner creativity. Avid romantic movie watcher (I'm talking recite the lines to every Nicholas Sparks film, obsessed). If I could move to any fictional location it would be Tree Hill, North Carolina (also an OTH fanatic). I'm a firm believer that every person needs to experience The Office (at least) once in their lifetime. Oh and I am most definitely a dog over cats type of person.
