¡VIVE!, a new Latin music group on campus, started this year at Williams College. The group consists of singers and instrumentalists (myself included), who range from new to experienced learners. We focus on all kinds of Latin music, from older songs to new popular songs. I briefly interviewed one of the founders, Andrea Alvarez, who told me a little more about how ¡VIVE! was formed and her take on the new club.
What inspired you to start ¡VIVE!?
Andrea: The idea actually came from a friend at school. She mentioned that there were no student-led Latin music groups on campus. Chris Ochoa and Joana Fernandez (the two other founders) really got it to start running. I thought that I could help out with the music aspect since I play the violin. It feels like a cool way to explore a new genre.
What does ¡VIVE!mean to you?
Andrea:¡VIVE!, so far, has become a place where I can find myself. It helps me connect with other people and also gives me an opportunity to explore a new branch of music. I already listen to Latin music, but I never play it since I play classical music on the violin. It also allows me to be with people who have similar music tastes.
What is the message that you want to send to your audience?
Andrea: I want them to know that there is a presence on campus that has not been given this kind of space. I want to make it clear that there’s a space for people who like Latin music. Also, that they get a sense that it is also about learning about themselves and just creating a community even if you have never played an instrument or even sang in a group before. Most importantly, I want them to have an inclination to explore and to not be afraid of making mistakes.
¡VIVE! allows anyone who would like to learn more about Latin music to join. Their mission is to create an inclusive space where students can learn and play Latin music.
Please come and support Vive! on May 5 at 7pm in Dodd Living Room!
