As most of us know, the Britney Spears conservatorship lawsuits have been a huge deal for the past year or so. They have been trending on social media and in the news. This past weekend, my roommate and I were browsing popular shows and movies on Netflix and came across the “Britney vs Spears” documentary. We have both been exposed to some of the information regarding the case through our social media, but were immediately intrigued and clicked play. We grew up listening to Britney’s music and have been fans of hers for a while, so we were really excited to get the tea about what exactly had been going on behind the scenes.
Erin Lee Carr and Jenny Eliscu investigate, produce and direct the documentary about Britney Spears’ fight for freedom from her conservatorship. It is no secret that Britney Spears has dealt with several personal issues and legal troubles throughout her career. From the infamous shaving of her head to being caught on camera driving with her infant on her lap, Britney has had her fair share of bad press. Recently, the #FreeBritney movement gained massive traction and grew to be a phenomena across various social media platforms including Instagram and TikTok. This has spread information and conspiracy theories rapidly, and millions of people have become entranced with what has been happening to Britney over the years. The documentary takes a critical step in analyzing her career and the details regarding the conservatorship.
Overall, my roommate and I really enjoyed the documentary. It shed light on many new facts and managed to get a good amount of people who were close to Britney to speak about her life and specifically the conservatorship. “Britney vs Spears” quickly establishes the magnitude of Britney’s career and reveals footage of the paparazzi attacks on the star. It is clear that she gained massive fame and popularity very quickly. The documentary exposes the conservatorship and the severe control it had over her. Carr and Eliscu claim that Britney couldn’t even order a hamburger or buy books for her sons without permission from her father. This information was shocking, but we appreciated finally getting the scoop of what was going on. Essentially, the public has only been able to see the vague and honestly just weird Instagrams and captions supposedly posted and written by Britney. The documentary works to expose the underlying rules and regulations forced upon Britney’s life by her father. Ultimately, Carr and Eliscu handle the information in a very tactful way and conduct a thorough investigation of Britney’s conservatorship.
“Britney vs Spears” portrays a number of revelations about her long fight with her conservatorship. While I wish there was less attention on the paparazzi’s footage, the overall structure of the film does a great job shining light on Britney’s struggles. A few weeks ago, Jamie Spears, Britney’s father, was suspended as Britney’s conservator. This is a huge win for the #FreeBritney movement, and I think her fans are very excited to continue supporting her. I definitely suggest sitting down on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and watching this documentary.
