Dream Closet: Making a Difference in the Winona Community

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

Dream Closet is finally here!

Upcoming Event

Dream Closet will be hosting an event on April 13 at the WSU Tau Center (511 Hilbert Street) from 12 p.m. to  2 p.m. This event is a great opportunity for anyone in need of purchasing or donating gently used clothes.

About Dream Closet

Dream Closet is a student-led organization at Winona State University. This organization was founded in 2013 by a Minnesota State University-Mankato student, Kylen Feltes, who saw a need for clothing in the community upon seasonal changes. This student worked with the local YMCA to collect donations in order to provide a free shopping event to the public. Once students at WSU found out about the event, they decided to bring it to their own community. Gently used clothing for men, women, and children have been collected through giving boxes placed around the community.

If you are interested in contributing clothes you no longer wear, these boxes are placed at Hy-Vee, Midtown Foods, and Wholesale Fruit in Rochester, and they will be accepting donations up until the day of the event. If you are looking for an on-campus donation site, boxes are placed in Somsen and the Science Laboratory Building.

I was able to ask the president of the club, Afton Bergdahl, about their mission. Here’s what she had to say:

“We try to focus this event towards the Winona community. We have had in the past where WSU students come and take advantage of the name brands. So as far as that, it is mainly for the Winona members that are in need of new clothing and can’t afford it. But, we are open to students who are in that same position. If students do want to come and see what the event is all about, especially if they are looking to join our club in the future, we highly recommend they come, too.

For students looking to get involved, they can always message our Facebook and Instagram accounts, or they can email me directly. We are always looking for new volunteers, as we can never have too many! Along with that, we will also be hosting a table at the club fair next fall!”

Whether you are interested in attending the event, joining the club next year, donating clothing items, or know someone who could personally benefit from this event, pass the message along!
