An undeniable thrill comes with finding a good book; especially one that makes you feel like you can conquer the world if you set your mind to it. When I first picked up the book #GirlBoss for the first time, the single Bad Girls by M.I.A. was stuck on repeat in my jumbled, millennial mind. After I read a chapter entitled, Money Looks Better in the bank Than on Your Feet, it was clear: Sophia Amoruso is the cover girl for a truly smart, badass entrepreneur.
While reading the book I thought to myself, it feels like Amoruso, the Founder and CEO of the $250-million-plus fashion retailer, Nasty Gal, is having a conversation with me instead of preaching some snippy get rich tips. She inspires her readers that they, too, can become #GirlBosses if they set their mind to it.
Aside the fact from dumpster diving, stealing items from retail stores, and becoming a sandwich artist at Subway during her teenage years; Amoruso founded Nasty Gal without borrowing a single penny from a bank. The author first started Nasty Gal by selling vintage items on E-Bay and later turned it into a company with over 400 employees. How she did all this without borrowing a single penny from a bank? I am not sure. What I am sure of though is that this is something a college professor can’t teach you how to undertake.
Amoruso offers honest advice: you need to uncover your strengths, learn from your mishaps in life, and know when to defy the rules that are set in stone from society.
She embraces the fact that any #GirlBoss must stay true to herself: if you don’t want to wear a crop top like everyone else, don’t. If you don’t have the urge to continue your education outside of college, don’t. And if you have the urge to do something you’re passionate about, by all means—please do!
Amoruso has started an international uprising for a #GirlBoss movement, and I highly advise that if you have any entrepreneurial spirit at heart or a keen eye for fashion, this book is a must read!
