Guydance: I Don’t Give Out My Number Like That

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

Dear Guydance,

I get really uncomfortable when a boy asks for my number; I just don’t give out my number like that. I always lie & say I have a boyfriend. Is there a better (more honest) way to say no thank you?

Sincerely,

Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

Always an awkward moment getting swerved on the number attempt. But it’s something every male should be prepared for and most are perfectly capable of handling. No need to lie though. They’ll find out your boyfriend-less if they’re interested enough and it can look bad for you if you lie about it. Just take the honest road like you said. Let them know that you only share your number with people of a certain basis. Maybe through further interaction he’ll prove worthy of getting those digits.

If said dude is just someone you’d really enjoy not conversing with at any point in life, then again, be honest. “I’m sorry, I don’t like giving out my number like that.” Blame it on a bad experience or trust issues if you feel the need for a better reason. I personally wouldn’t find it rude or anything, your phone number is yours to do with what you please.

If a guy happens to be defensive or offended…who cares. You were reasonable and honest about it so they can assess the ego damage and move on. If it’s an “I’m never going to see this guy again” type of deal, then be as ruthless as you wish.

Best of luck with further male endeavors,

Austin Opfer
