Tis’ the season for spring cleaning! As you de-clutter your life, take a special look at your closet this time around. Did you know that 95% of textiles that end up in landfills could have been recycled into new products? Yes, even that ratty old t-shirt, over used dish rag, and old sheets can have a second life, and we want to help you recycle them!
Her Campus Winona is partnering with H&M to make sure your old clothing doesn’t go to waste. Did you know that many thrift stores and donation locations will throw away clothing that looks worn or is deemed out of style?
We want to help end this cycle and bring new life to the textiles that are being exiled from your closet. Starting Monday April 13th, we will be tabling in front of UPAC from 11am-2pm all week, collecting your no-longer wanted clothing. All of the clothing collected throughout the week will be brought to a H&M store where it will be given a second life!
What happens to the clothes?
H&M is working to create conscious fashion. The first step is “reware”. If the clothing can be re-worn, it is marketed worldwide as “secondhand goods”. If the clothing is not wearable, the next step in it’s lifecycle is “reuse”. Textiles that can no longer be worn can be used as other products, such as cleaning cloths. If the item cannot be reused, it is recycled. These products are broken down into fibers and raw materials that are used to create new products like insulation. The final step when an item cannot be re-worn, reused, or recycled is to be converted to energy.
Much like the space dwindling in your closet, space is dwindling in landfills as well. Rid of your old clothes and make room for new! Not only are we accepting your unwanted clothing, but any type of textiles! This includes towels, table cloths, blankets, bed sheets, curtains, etc. It’s time to clean house. For every bag of clothing donated, you will be entered to win one of three $20 H&M gift cards, courtesy of HC Winona!
Let’s get real, we all have those items of clothing that have seen zero love this year. Give them a new life; whether they move to a new closet or are transformed into something new altogether.
