Buckle your seatbelts ladies (and gentlemen) because February 22nd could quite possibly be one of the greatest national days to bless the face of the earth. What is it? National Margarita Day, of course! Margaritas are a staple drink from Mexico and are made with a 3-2-1 ratio of Tequila, Triple Sec, and lime juice. Delicious right?

There are no legitimate documentations about when the first margarita was made, but there is a story that says in 1938, Carlos “Danny” Herrera, at his restaurant Rancho La Gloria, halfway between Tijuana and Rosarito, Mexico, created this drink for a customer who was allergic to many spirits, but not Tequila. So shoutout to Danny Herrera for this magical drink!

Margaritas come in many different varieties and flavors. If you’re not a fan of lime (like me), there are many other delicious flavors of margaritas to have instead, some of them being watermelon, mango, strawberry, and raspberry. If you’re daring enough to try them, there are some more unusual flavors like spicy red chili margarita from foodrepublic.com, or a green tea margarita from theluxuryspot.com. I don’t know about you but I’m going to stick to the classics.

Not only are margaritas tasty, but they’re also easy to make. So if you’re not inclined to go out and celebrate this day, here are a couple recipes that will be easy enough to make at home.

Pomegranate Margarita

–       ¼ cup pomegranate juice

–       1/3 tequila Blanco

–       1/8 cup Triple Sec

–       ¼ cup fresh lime juice

–       12 ounces ice cubes

Combine all ingredients in a blender and pulse until frothy and well combined. Rim the glasses with lime juice (use a lime wedge) and dip in margarita salt. Drop some pomegranate seeds in the bottom of the glass (optional), pour margarita mix over and serve.

Classic Margarita

–       1 lime, halved

–       ½ cup lime juice (about 5 limes)

–       2 tablespoons lemon juice

–       1 cup Triple Sec

–       1 cup white Tequila

–       2 cups ice, plus extra for serving

–       kosher salt

Combine the lime juice, lemon juice, Triple Sec, tequila, and ice in a blender and puree. Place extra ice in a cocktail shaker, fill with margarita mix, shake well and strain into glasses. Rim the glass with lime wedge and salt.

These are just two margarita recipes out of the hundreds there are. National Margarita Day happens once a year, so go out and celebrate however you see fit! But remember, drink responsibly, and don’t drink and drive. Enjoy those margs!
