An Open Letter To My Middle School Self

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

Dear Middle School Me,

Wow. We did some great things back then. This was a time where finding yourself was just something new. Yes, I understand that finding yourself is most likely underneath the makeup that is caking over those massive zits. And yes, those beautiful adult teeth are looking like your life right about now: messed up.

I know that we struggled from feeling like Shrek on campus, being the first girl to get your period in your grade, and those girls who told you “you’re the first one who can have sexxx!” Don’t worry, that stain on your pants is not a shame but more of an accomplishment of entering womanhood. Your looks will get better, and honestly as much as you try, your hair will never be straight.

Just a reminder that girls are mean, but we knew this from the beginning. Those friends that were so close, ya, they aren’t around anymore, but then again, hopefully, a few certain ones still are. Those notes you wrote and pictures you drew to your besties are still sitting in a box in your room. Every once in awhile you remember the guy you stared at in Biology, the one you couldn’t help but start up an awkward conversation with just because that meant you were “talking” and no one else was around to say otherwise. And yes, guys those random names you heard shouted in the halls, those were your nicknames.

You loved going to those football games. This was a spot where the cool kids were, and honey you were one of them. Except that time where you painted your entire face white…then blue… because that was the school spirit, right? Well yes, but maybe that’s a little excessive. Stick to just cheering on the hotties in the tight pants and bring a pom-pom with next time.

I just wish you knew that boys are still boys, some looks may count but that’s not all that matters, friendships will grow, no matter who they are with and those nicknames and notes still remain. I know you know that friend who was once your main frenemy but now you are closer than ever. Just like those braces on your sweet, kinda gross face, they just signify a short time in your life, middle school.

Love,

Yourself (The most awkward girl you will ever meet)
